Anyone else here read Lawrence Block?
His Matthew Scudder series has me hooked. It may be slightly too low key and nonviolent for some readers, but the sense of time and place in a downbeat,mid- 20th Century New York is palpable. Scudder is an ex-cop operating as a P.I. without a license. He's also a divorced recovering alcoholic who still visits his favorite watering holes while rarely touching alcohol. He doesn't often have to get physically rough, but he's very capable.

If you like noir, you'll probably enjoy Bloch.
8 Million Ways to Die, A Walk Among the Tombstones, A Stab in the Dark
