Are these worth reading? I remember my mom, sister, and every other female in the Greater New Orleans Area being totally wrapped up into these novels, which is kind of why I never read them.
I love novels set in New Orleans, but something about Rice herself has always turned me off.

Interview with a vampire is okay, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned are very solid. The couple I read after that were pretty meh and I stopped reading. The first three books can basically be read as a completed trilogy anyway though, so they are worth checking out sometime.
The first couple mayfair witches books are very solid too.

The Witching Hour was great, except for a patch in the middle. Got boring but ramped back up.

agree with both of the comments above. The New Orleans setting aded a bit of personal connection. BOth series lost me later on and I just stopped buying them after the devil memnoch(?) and whatever the second witching book was

The first three books are self contained stories though, correct?

Yes, as I recall (it is been over 30 years), each of the 3 first books were stand-alone
