A recommendation - Their Eyes Were Watching God

Written by Zora Neale Hurston.
This may be one the denizens of TD are not naturally drawn to, but I thought it was an excellent read.
It is written using a great deal of dialect/vernacular, but for me it has some of the smoothest literary devices out there. Some examples:
The sun was gone, but he had left his footprints in the sky.
They became lords of sounds and lesser things. They passed nations through their mouths. They sat in judgment.
Just excellent writing and craftsmanship in my opinion.

At your recommendation I found this and downloaded it and started reading it.
The dialogue does jar you with the phoenetics stressed over a written word but it is cool. I have worked with black women for years and can envision these conversations very well. Over-exaggeration in different cultures is always awesome (think Jewish mom or grandmother.
Thanks, back to the book, then back to the Will Trent series.

I didn't realize they had made a movie from it. I can see that would be difficult to do well.

I read it in high school and thought it was great - so much so that I still remember a lot of what I read, it’s very, very good
