Yeah he definitely wasn't intending to hurt him but he also wasn't innocently throwing the ball to the ref. You just don't throw a baseball pass to someone across the court if they aren't looking.

Threw it when the ref was neither looking nor expecting it. Deserved the technical. Can't just randomly throw a ball at people's head.
