The plans for a new arena on LSU's campus will move forward after the Metro Council voted to restrict live music and entertainment events at the Cane’s River Center in downtown Baton Rouge to 3,500 attendees for the next 30 years.

The new arena will replace the PMAC and the River Center will be redeveloped to cater to conventions, with a new hotel being constructed that will attached to the property, according to The Advocate:

Under the new ordinance, which passed by a vote of 10-1-1 after a heated two-hour discussion, the River Center arena will be redeveloped to cater to conventions, and a new hotel attached to the property will be constructed. Councilwoman Chauna Banks was the sole dissenter on the measure, while Councilman Darryl Hurst abstained from the vote after attempting to defer the item for 60 days to no avail.

LSU’s Tiger Athletic Foundation, the private arm of the university’s athletic program, plans to build a new on-campus arena costing between $350 million and $400 million with up to 13,000 seats. The arena is expected to replace the 50-year-old Pete Maravich Assembly Center and house the city’s large concerts.

But to carry out the plan, city-parish officials were asked to limit potential competition between the River Center and the proposed arena by capping River Center events. Sporting events like hockey will have a separate cap of 8,500 attendees, while the newly renovated River Center theater with 1,999 seats and exhibition hall are exempt from the requirement.
The article states that the new arena will open in about five years, according to LSU and TAF. The location of the new arena has not been decided yet.

A 13,000 seat arena will be hard to fill for basketball. Unfortunately, I think it'll look like tiger stadium after halftime.

It's going to be amazing when ALL the shows head to Lamar Dixon with almost unlimited space. Just build a new basketball arena if you need one.

What's the max ice hockey can seat now?

I’m hearing it’ll have restaurants, bars, a casino & maybe a place to play basketball . Sarcasm . Maybe build a few 3 deck parking lots & rebuild Nicholson Dr.Not Sarcasm. I went to 100’s of concerts at the PMAC so I don’t understand why the new building needs to cater to concerts.

Maybe they will turn the PMAC into a library. Like the library it leaks & smells moldy so it’ll be the same

Pete never lost his record to a girl. She’s ineligible because she plays against women and a non regulated basketball
