LSU held a press conference on Monday afternoon to officially introduce Lane Kiffin as the school's new football head coach. Here are the main tidbits of what he had to say:
Intro:
"The opportunity at LSU is just different. LSU is the best job in football. When you take the history, tradition, passion, and the great players in the state, no one can argue that when you are in Tiger Stadium, there is nothing like it."
On leaving Ole Miss:
"The last six years of my life have been the best six years of my life. I owe that to all the players, assistant coaches, and people of Oxford. It will be an amazing part of my story."
On his football journey:
"I believe that everything that I've been through has prepared me for this moment at this place right now."
On recruiting:
"Our program at LSU will be designed top to bottom to be the No. 1 destination for elite players in the country. That's why we are here. Bring the best players to LSU. It starts right here in Louisiana."
Closing statement:
"It's time for LSU to take its place back as the best program in all of college football. And that's what we're here to do. Thanks for being here. Thanks for believing in me. Now let's go to work. Geaux Tigers."
Q&A:
On adapting in College Football:
"College Football has changed a lot over the years. Something we do extremely well... We don't just think outside the box. We create a new box."
On his decision to come to LSU and the advice he received from his mentors:
"I feel like everyone I talked to said the same thing: You are going to regret it if you don't take your shot and go to LSU. It's the best job in America."
On his offense:
"We have the most unique offense in the country from learning from so many people along the way. And listening to defensive minds like my Dad (Monte Kiffin), Pete Carroll, Nick Saban, about what gave them issues."
Kiffin said he doesn't really know the details of his new LSU contract:
"All I wanted to know from my agent, Jimmy Sexton, was about the $ numbers for the players and NIL. That was most important."
On how Verge Ausberry said exactly what he wanted to hear in his pitch:
"He said: 'I'm going to leave you alone and let you coach the team.' I like it when I hear that. We're going to give you everything you need, leave you alone, and let you win a championship."
Kiffin detailed his crazy Sunday and all the drama that followed him on his exit from Oxford:
"And then I get to Baton Rouge, and you drive by Tiger Stadium, and it's lit up. And I see it... I knew I absolutely made the right decision. And all that (drama) went away.
Lane Kiffin on driving by Tiger Stadium last night:
"I called Ed Orgeron... I said: 'This place makes me want to talk to like you.' He said 'Coach, you're at the best place in America."
On working the transfer portal:
"I have zero concerns about the transfer portal and the interest of players. I know what the interest was nationally at my last stop. When you put that with this stadium and that (LSU) logo... it makes me want to get on the phone right now."
-Kiffin says Frank Wilson will continue as interim head coach for LSU's bowl game.
-Kiffin says the No. 1 priority is the staff and signing the best class they possibly can this week.
-Kiffin says he informed Ole Miss officials that he was leaving Saturday night. He didn't find out until Sunday, around 8:30 am, that he wouldn't be able to coach the playoffs.
"They told me I couldn't talk to the players. But I get it, I understand it, and I respect it."
