Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
During his weekly radio show on Wednesday night, head coach Ed Orgeron said that true freshman quarterback TJ Finley will likely start vs. Alabama on Saturday.

Orgeron added that fellow true freshman Max Johnson will also play vs. the Crimson Tide.

Finley got the start vs. Texas A&M last week but alternated with Johnson throughout the game and completed 9-of-25 passes for 118 yards and two interceptions. Johnson went 14-of-22 for 113 yards and 1 touchdown.

TJ is way better than Jordan AND Lee, and Max will be as well. And both those QBs had better lines than this current LSU team with more seasoned weapons. Jarrett Lee also was at LSU for 5 years total and didn’t improve or outright win the job so that’s his fault. Also, Max has played no meaningful time, garbage time if you may. Not saying he isn’t good, but he’s literally averaging 1.2 yards per rush (17 total carries) and TJ is averaging like 1.6 (23 carries) which accounts for sacks as well. Even if you take out the USC game from Finley, he’s at 15 carries at 1.5 yards per (sack carries included). Numbers matter. Regardless of who plays, both are screwed with this line. Max might “scramble better” but he’s a still a freshman with a trash line and isn’t even Burrow type of athletic. TJ shows the better poise and arm of the two. It’s a coin toss.

Hey Puttmail_393, you claim down below in your post that Max Johnson is short and claim he is 5’8” tall. In fact, Johnson is listed as 6’5” on LSU’s roster. I know it may not suit your agenda but your claim is BS. Max Johnson has simply looked better than Finley at this point. I would like to see Johnson have an opportunity to start a game and not just come in when the game is out of reach or he gets sent in when LSU has the ball at its own 5 yard line. Finley completely wasted the great defensive game by LSU’s Defense and removed any chance of LSU pulling the game out with his absolutely horrible pick six. Then and only then did Johnson have an opportunity to play and he led the team on a nice TD drive. After witnessing Finley struggle over and over Johnson came in and moved the team. Why wouldn’t you want to continue with Finley as a starter and not give Johnson a shot? Why?

Almost every time Finley completes a pass the WR ends up falling to the ground. The one notable exception was with TM, who could contort his body, scoop the ball up from his knee or from the backside of his hip, and--despite the threat of getting crunched between a CB and a Safety--turn up the field for some major YAC. With Johnson, so long as he is on the same page as the WR, his receiver can catch the ball and make a move. I think that the whole team would be better off if Max had a chance to get 1st team reps all week and knew he was going to be counted on to start.

You need to relay your observations to Coach O and the staff. Obviously they don't see what you see oh observant one. Nor do I. I do know some see what they want to see.

The guy who led LSU to its’ only TD drive against A&M and has been only allowed to play after Finley has ruined LSU’s chances against Auburn and A&M deserves an opportunity to start. WTF has Finley done to earn anything at this point? Finley is a true Freshman and so is Max Johnson and LSU has no reason to be blindly loyal to either one but after being given opportunity after opportunity Finley has not progressed at all. Blame the OL or whoever you want blame but Finley is highly inaccurate and has proven ha cannot throw much more than a long ball. His passes in the flat are begging to be picked off and his passes on crossing routes are high, low, and behind receivers as well as late. Finley needs to have a very short leash and I mean very short.

I’m with ya rob62 Makes zero sense.. I’m hoping that calling Finley the probable starter is just an attempt of throwing deception at bama... if that’s not the case there’s even more delusion with the coaching staff than I thought.

this will look very similar to all LSU games versus bama minus last year. OLine gets blown up , QB no time to do anything. Defense will get run on for over 300 yards. Coach O has a lot of work to do.

Sounds familuar. Mile's sticking with Jefferson against Bama.

No. That was a championship level team. With two capable quarterbacks with different skill sets. This is two unprepared and not ready quarterbacks. On one of the worst power 5 teams in the country.

Totally agree. Finley has looked horrible in every game except South Carolina. Bad decision.

Ok put 5.8 Johnson in to get 90% of his ball batted down and a fractured rib cage by the half. We need a taller physical QB to beat bama. Theire too physical of a team!

I love but WTF????? TJ can maybe take more late hits than Max but we are so fricked for this game. Do the coaches have money on Bama?

TJ is bigger, sturdier at this point and slightly less likely to get killed. I like the move.

Well, Ed is nuts. Everyone can see it, with pressure and coverage TJ looks like a lost freshman, Johnson is better. A better release and at least a little mobility.

You lost me with the better release! Better get but we all know who hold the cannon out those two.
