LSU Battles Through Crazy Weather To Beat Tennessee 30-10

Per LSUSports.net: BATON ROUGE -- No. 20 LSU had two takeaways on special teams and forced three turnovers on downs, as the Tigers survived a monsoon on Rocky Top to beat Tennessee, 30-10.

LSU (8-3, 7-2 SEC) accomplished eight victories for the 18th-straight season, marking the longest in SEC history and tying Oklahoma for the longest current streak in Power-5 conference football.

As expected, Tennessee came to play. Fortunately, their punt returner did not. Two muffed punts gave the Tigers what they needed to lead when they could have easily trailed at the half. Etling, Williams and Guice were outstanding and the o-line eventually wore down the Vols d-line for the win! Zach Von Rosenberg also deserves credit for keeping Tennessee pinned down all night long in a game of field position on a rain soaked field. The only negatives: Donte Jackson and Connor Culp, although Culp could possibly be excused due to the field conditions. I can’t say the same for Jackson, as he has been horrible all year long. Anyway, a good win in a tough environment with adverse conditions. I’ll take it! BTW: Mississippi St. beat Arkansas yesterday to climb to 8-3(4-3 SEC), and Troy won their 4th straight and are 8-2(5-1 Sun Belt), in 1st place in their conference. Although we must win against teams like that, they are not exactly cupcakes! I am proud of these young Tigers and very excited about the future! Beat A&M next weekend and let’s geaux bowling, Tigers! 10 wins still within reach!

Donte Jackson needs to look like staying his senior year. He has always been beat on the deep ball. I’m probably going to get down voted into eternity but I dont think he is a elite player. Only thing that he has going for him is his speed. He can’t get his head around and he gets beat.

Not to mention the same returner completely biffing the 2nd half kickoff in blinding rain. I don’t the he ever actually saw the ball until it went past him. Something that’s not been appreciated is the field position game. That was the biggest reason the game turned out the way it did. Not to say the team didn’t play well down the stretch, but to have scored 10 points without getting a first down is entirely based on the field position of the two muffed punts. Tennessee played with a long field the entire game. Add another negative: defending the screen. The majority of the Tennessee offense (minus the blow coverages by Jackson and Toliver on deep balls) came from big gains on third down from the screen. I like the aggressive defense, but that was inexcusable, especially in the conditions where significant pass rush wasn’t necessary. Got to clean that up.

Three big positives, though: Darrell Williams has really developed this year. Will be sad to see him go. And the defense has gotten some swagger back. They are playing loose and fast like LSU defense is supposed to be played. Amazing how many of those guys are coming back next year. And the oline is very much coming into their own. Chemistry built this year will pay huge dividends next season.

Just wanted to point out that we are not 7-2 SEC, as stated above. There are only 8 conference games, not 9. We are 5-2 with a chance to geaux 6-2 with a win over A&M. Coach O is now 9-4 SEC as head coach with a 5-1 road record in conference games. Not bad for a guy who supposedly can’t win in the SEC. The talent pool at LSU is vastly superior to that at Ole Miss!
