ESPN released updated preseason Football Power Index (FPI) Rankings for 2017 on Thursday and pegged LSU right outside the Top 5 at No. 6. Here is how the FPI is described by ESPN:
quote:

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. The whole thing is New York, New York based mob crappola. They are putting LSU out of the Alabama game already. Deciding next who Alabama can most easily rob out of the NCAA title. I see no one in the top five that could beat em.

Justifies the OU ranking from a perception standpoint, while also helping the ACC (win or lose) when they play Clemson early. People will forget about other conferences during the regular season. You set the pecking order early
