LSU Sports - Chris Parent (@chrisparent)
On Monday, head coach Ed Orgeron commented on LSU's improved red-zone efficiency this season, giving credit to offensive coordinator Steven Ensminger and offensive assistant/passing game coordinator Jerry Sullivan for the Tigers success through 4 games this season. Here's what he had to say according to his Monday press conference transcript.
quote:

As far as other things, we lead the nation in red-zone offense. It was something that we wanted to improve on. Since Coach (Steve) Ensminger has been the offensive coordinator, we are 40 of 43 in the red-zone which is phenomenal.

On how the team has been able to become more consistent in the red zone…
“Well, first of all, we practice red zone this year on Mondays and Thursdays. Last year, we only practiced red zone on Thursdays. We practiced red zone three times a week in camp, so I think we have a different offense in the red zone than we have in an upfield situation. So that’s different with coach Ensminger. Bringing Jerry Sullivan along, who is our red zone expert and he a bunch of great schemes against all the red zone defenses we see. I think that combination and we have been very aggressive in the red zone. We’re going to go for it on fourth and one if we have a chance there and then obviously the addition of Cole Tracy. I think all that coming together creates a mindset that we’re going to score once we go in the red zone and coach Ensminger has taken on that mindset.”

our recievers are never open and they seem to run the wrong routes. They also never run back to the ball when the QB is in touble

We are 96th in the country in Red Zone TD%. That is atrocious. Why is he talking about improving there when we can't score touchdowns? The only thing we got better on in the red zone is kicking thanks to Cole Tracy. Other than that, we haven't improved at all.

40 of 43 isn't because of Cole Tracy. Yes it would be nice to score touchdowns over field goals but the important thing is to come away with points. Ask Gus Malzahn if he regrets not going for the field goal 2 weekends ago

I do agree however that we need to come away with touchdowns when we get in the red zone...but I'd take 40 of 43 over 35 of 43 with 5 more turnovers because we tried to force passes in the end zone

"Yes it would be nice to score touchdowns over field goals but the important thing is to come away with points" ..... we're not beating UGA or Bama with FGs.

It is a great number. Let's get a few more TDs out of it. Gonna need them for the pound puppies and gumps.
