LSU (7-1) debuted at No. 3 in the initial College Football Rankings on Tuesday night, just one spot ahead of undefeated Notre Dame (8-0) at No. 4.

Committee Chair and Oregon Athletics Director Rob Mullens spoke with ESPN's Rece Davis after the rankings came out and explained why the Tigers were ahead of Notre Dame.
quote:

"Well, there was a lot of discussion on that, obviously," Mullens explained. “When you look at LSU’s resume, they have six wins over teams above .500 that include quality wins against Georgia and Mississippi State. Their only loss was a close loss at Florida. Really impressed with their defense and overall their body of work was pretty strong.”
LSU will host No. 1 Alabama this weekend while Notre Dame plays at Northwestern.

They did it for Alabama. When they lose it will be against the #3 at home. No conference championship but they can still get into the CFP

Because they know Bama is about to beat them anyway and wanted to make some news. Also, ND should have lost to Vandy.

They most likely did this to hype up the game this weekend. This will be settled on the field soon enough.

Because putting LSU at #4 would kill the hype?

If they’re looking at wins over teams above .500, LSU would probably be No. 1.
