LSU officially announced the hiring of new defensive line coach Kyle Williams on Wednesday, who returns to Baton Rouge, where he was an All-American with the Tigers and won a national title in 2003.

Head coach Brian Kelly met with the media after spring practice on Wednesday morning and discussed the addition of Williams.

"His career at LSU is well-chronicled," Kelly said. "He's an All-American and has won a national title here at LSU. And a six-time pro bowler, 13 years in the NFL. He certainly brings an impressive resume to the position."

"He's a quality individual, high character, and a great husband and father. And someone that really is who you want recruiting student-athletes at LSU."

After wrapping up his opening remarks, Kelly was asked about his early impressions of Williams through the first few days of spring practice.
quote:

"I think the things that stand out immediately for me are his attention to the finer points of playing the position. He's somebody who has recently played the position and clearly understands the nuances of the position. He can articulate and communicate that effectively to the players. That connection is very apparent to me."

"I got a chance to spend a little time out there today, probably about 10-15 minutes, just listening to him and the way he connects with the players. I know he’s going to make a great impact for us."
Kelly also was asked about the constant turnover at defensive line coach.
quote:

"Unfortunately, the D-line job has been a turnover position for us, Kelly explained. "I've dealt with similar situations at other positions throughout my career. We’ve turned out great players at the position, so it’s not like it’s not a position coaches don’t want to coach. I think it’s much more about them being sought-after."

"I will say that that was part of it when we looked at the candidates... it wasn’t 'hey, you have to stay here for 10 years,' but we had that as part of our process."

"We were looking for some continuity at the position, and Kyle was looking to settle in. So that that was an attractive match for us from that perspective."

Agree with Kelly that revolving door at DL coach was not good for last decade.

He just needs to put a d-line on the field like the one he played on in 2003. No pressure.
