Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports
Dan Wolken with USA Today suggested that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is "very interested" in the head coaching job at Virginia Tech now that Frank Beamer announced that he is retiring after the season ends.

Smart's name has came up often over the past two offseason when head coaching jobs have become available. Expect more of the same with the numerous jobs now open in College Football.

Why wouldn't he be? He knows if the Defense doesn't return to its 2009 form Bama fans will be calling for his head and he won't get a shot anywhere big. Question is, are they very interested in him?

I think that's an ideal place for him. He'll have the time and not as much competition. There's an outside chance he could get UGA if Richt is gone, but I can't see them giving him a chance sight unseen as a head coach.

And if he's a success at Va Tech, Bama could come calling one day. I think there are many alumni that don't want to call Dabo to come home.
