Where's the brunt of cost increase coming from? Are producers having to charge more because feed costs have increased?
Nope. Farmers are getting lower prices this year compared to last. For example last year avg price/lb on catfish was 1.35
Right now it’s 1.17 and feed is 100 dollars a ton higher than last year.
It’s the distributors and retailers. They’re keeping the artificially high prices they set during covid when supply was low and raking it in. By the time they decide to finally lower prices once sales hit bottom, many producers will be out of business and supply will run low again, causing prices to go right back up
Blame the big corporate middle men like Sysco, US foods, etc and giant retailers who won’t reduce their prices when we reduce ours

Where do you think the beef, chicken, and fish for those restaurants come from?

I have plenty of beef that a local slaughterhouse kills and packages for me.
Same here, I barter a whole cow feed out and butchered for some land rent...
We also raise goats and have incorporated that into our menu...
Before my daughter moved out she talked me into getting chickens for her to raise and sell eggs... We still have them going and they produce more than we can eat...
My son fishes every weekend, so we always have fish available... We both hunt so venison is usually in the freezer year round...
About the only meat we buy is bacon (other pork) and shrimp (normally get it off the boat)...

We've been eating more soup. Chicken tortilla soup, for example will last us for three meals using the same amount of chicken we would eat in one meal if we grilled it. Finding ways to stretch a dollar is a real thing.
Cooked a big chuck roast Sunday for supper, then took the leftover roast and gravy and made a big pot of vegetable beef soup and cornbread yesterday evening.....good stuff.

Broccoli = 12.9 grams protein
Steak = 112 grams protein
Yeah, in how much? 1 Serving? I said PER POUND.
Broccoli more protein than steak

Those figures are per pound dumbass...
Two ounces of steak has MORE protein than a whole pound of broccoli...

My family is buying sides of beef directly from the rancher, and having it processed. Better, fresher meat, and cost savings to boot.

Thing is, if demand is down and inventories up why aren’t prices coming down?
If the producers are taking (and storing) the inventory... even better.

2. There is protein in almost everything you eat (that is real food). There is more protein in a pound of broccoli than there is a pound of steak (although a pound of broccoli is a LOT of broccoli).

IDK if we are saving much money but we paid about a grand for 1/4 of a cow. That was about 80lbs of ground beef and all kinds of cuts with it. We haven't bought any beef other than filets since March.

None of this makes any damn sense but you’re about to see a ton of producers, processors, farmers go under in 2024 if it doesn’t get better.
Maybe they shouldn’t have jacked those prices up.

I think we are getting a little better deal than you are, not sure. We end up paying more for ground beef, but much, much less for good steaks.

Steaks are way up around here. I only buy when it's reduced because of expiration date. Ground meat prices haven't gone up much at all. Same with pork loin. Fish has gone up.
Dairy: We don't buy milk, yogurt or ice cream at all. A dozen eggs at $2 lasts us for a 10 days.
Carbs: Wife is on Keto kick so no carbs. I still eat brown rice every other day.
Vegetables: Peas, carrots and Romaine. Not expensive.

Do any of the catfish farmers like you offer any direct-to-consumer sales? I buy beef, pork and other items from a local farm that has a great website that bypasses most retailers. They sell direct and also place in some local specialty markets.
Seems lots of food, from beef to bread is going the direct route. I also wonder if these sales are captured in the stats you have.

Lower the price and they will come.
