We eat mostly venison, probably not cheaper than beef but I love to hunt
I have a dozen chickens so we eat eggs.
Occasional pork loins,baby back ribs.
Haven’t bought beef in years nor dairy,no milk,no ice cream except what wife buys for grandchildren occasionally.

I thought you were a lady.

But to answer the OP:

We garden and we hunt. But, we probably have bought less fresh than normal. I've cut back on certain things diet wise. But, other than, we haven't changed much.

Chicken - Albertsons has boneless skinless breasts and thighs for $1.99/lb everyday and sometimes cheaper on sale.

Pork chops - when they're on sale at Rouse's for $1.50 or less

Deer - for anything that calls for ground beef

and we stock the freezer with shrimp and redfish that we catch ourselves.

We have a rule in our family when you see brisket on sale, buy it. I've got at least 10 stored in deep freeze. We also started doing that with any meats that we eat a lot of. And then when do buy I look for the deals and buy the meat myself.

Also thinking of keeping a calf and fattening it up.

That doesn't sound free to me, baw, but it does sound delicious!

Had catfish Sunday. Today was poke for lunch and chili for dinner.

Steak last night and fajitas the night before.

All home made, except for the poke.

There is protein in almost everything you eat (that is real food). There is more protein in a pound of broccoli than there is a pound of steak (although a pound of broccoli is a LOT of broccoli).
A pound of broccoli has like 10g of protein, a pound strip steak has 92g....so that was a swing and miss. So, I suppose you could eat nine pounds of broccoli.

You would be better off with 1/2 cow, raising one calf would be costly..but you end up with a huge amount of off cuts. I like them, but you braise a bunch.

A steer calf would probably run you about 250 dollars, I dont even know if you can buy just 1...then the feed, the vet, the whatever...then you gotta get it killed, cleaned, and butchered. If you just get a 1/2 or whole it probably wont cost you a whole lot more.

But back to the point, our meat consumption is not down per se, but I am shopping much harder and not just grabbing a pack of ribeyes and am taking adbantage of Sams for poultry or watching the sales papers. Havent dont that since the 90s.

Mrs. Axe and I catch a shitload of catfish, bluegill and crappie every year, and so we've just kept more than usual this past couple years and are eating a lot more fish. It costs zero because I trap and net our own bait and already own tens of thousands of dollars worth of fishing rods and tackle. My garage looks like a Bass Pro Shops aisle and I have a fully functional 300 gallon homemade, aerated livewell under the carport. Seriously, my expensive fishing addiction has paid big dividends lately.
You just made me feel better about my stupid expensive amount of fishing tackle. Thanks man.

Now if I could get my wife on board with believing this it would be great.

eating alot more beans(buy dry beans only), canned tuna and salmon, quinoa instead of rice because more protein and fiber than rice.

I know I ate less meats, eggs, and salmon filets this year than in yrs past. still like my bacon and eggs, just do not eat as much.

Beans in many dishes including salads. Turkey lunch meat instead of chicken in salads, add quinoa too.

Quinoa and beans instead of rice and beans.

I think you are right. I know 20 people who could never lose weight who are now skinnier than they should be. That’s a lot of excess food not being eaten.

I think the units are confusing everyone. Broccoli is much heavier per lb than steak.

You are the only person in history to answer “feathers” to the riddle: What is heavier a ton of steel or a ton of feathers?
