Why do so many people want California to take on the federal government's responsibilities like immigration and defense?

sure the citizens pay more than they get back, but without the fed cali is fricked. Its financials aren't pretty

Maybe their financials wouldn't look so bad if they got back as much as they gave to the feds - or if they got back MORE, like Louisiana.

Then secede. If California is so high and mighty and can take care of their own, why aren't they?

Only Southern Republicans seem to think California is so high and mighty.

But maybe Californians are more dedicated to the Union than red states like true patriots.

You remember the Union, don't you?

The US would be frickED if California and New York were to secede.

California is going against federal law by not only allowing illegal aliens to come in but provide taxpayer services to them.

Maybe Louisiana wouldn't have so bad if for decades we didn't get screwed on our oil royalties. Pitiful that other states can get up to 20 times the royalties like Wyoming does on its mineral rights.

so California's financials look bad because their citizens pay income taxes to the federal government? man. You don't know what you don't know.

Only the Feds can enforce but historically there's been cooperation. Even 10 years ago the LAPD and LASD helped ICE when they were looking for someone, but no longer will. ICE sends a list and says let us know if you run into these people and have them in custody and LA tells them to frick off.

Did you see that yesterday LA announced a $10 million fund that's partially taxpayer funded to help people here illegally fight deportation? It's insane.

It's a dumb thread topic since it won't happen and deserves dumb conjecture in response. But trump has property here. He wants it to succeed. He wants us to succeed. Even more than he wants red states to succeed. Deal with that.

No they aren't, immigration is the domain of the federal government. If the feds can't get a handle on who's 'coming in', then maybe they need to dedicate more resources to the job. Also, it's not California's job to identify who is legal and who is not, it IS their job to provide services to their inhabitants.

Indeed, but not just the amount of the royalties, but also the extent of state territorial waters. Texas (as would Florida- if they allowed offshore o/g production) gets royalties from production up to 9 nautical miles off their coast while it's only 3 miles for Louisiana.

The national 21 year old drinking age says you're full of shite. The federal government uses the power of the purse to compel states to do its bidding. You have to show proof of status to open a fricking bank account...the feds could legislate the same requirement for enrolling in school. I'm not saying that I advocate that, but you've got to be pretty fricking stupid to not see the possibility.

And extend that to schools and hospitals. And welfare benefits should ONLY be made to citizens. If it was made harder for these criminals (illegal immigrants) to be here, many of them would leave.

This might be something that congress could do, in a somewhat targeted and limited way. But the comments and discussion here makes me wonder what happened to this board. Trump can't just cut off federal funds to California and California can't just decide to not pay taxes. (California as a state probably doesn't pay a great deal of tax, although citizens and businesses there probably pay a lot of taxes.) And if the state of California, like any other state, decided to try to free its citizens from federal taxation, the feds would probably send in the army and shoot or lock up a whole bunch of people. Seems like there was a war over something like that a while back that didn't turn out so well for the people who wanted out.

Well...considering the state of California most certainly does not write a check to Uncle Sam that is anywhere near the funding the state receives...the irony is lost on me. The figure everyone is parroting in this thread is the amount of federal income tax dollars paid by residents of California. It really has no bearing on the state receiving federal funding. Do you think the IRS would just forget about those returns if funding was cut? So yes...I fail to see the irony. Just as you failed to realize your ignorance.

My Post:

"Florida and Texas aren't even in the running..California, New York, Mass. These are the states funding the federal government. Texas is either a penny ahead or behind every year...it fluctuates but never by more than a penny or so on the dollar and Florida is a net recipient of federal taxes every year...."

And this is you response:

So, you think one state can bring the other 49 to it's knees.

Damn you're dumb.

I remind you...

1. California
2. New York
3. Mass

Even in Louisiana that is trois not un...no matter where you are on earth even dumb people know that three ain't one....

Texas is th only state in the entire country that has a rainy day fund/savings account

They actually put aside and SAVE money each year. What a novelty idea

Bill Clinton did that one year and most folks felt that they were due a refund because the government had collected too much in taxes...

It is a good idea though....

LULZ ... would love to see you try to explain that and make it make any sense whatsoever.

Pretty simple idea actually...you do realize that state income taxes, sales taxes and property taxes are all deductible at the federal level, right? Every penny that Washington does not send to California will mean an increase in those taxes which are deductible at the federal level. Washington, getting more money from California than it sends back, will run out faster than California will....the effect on taxpayers in the state would be negligible because the increase in deductible state taxes would offset the increase by reducing the federal burden.

You have a valid point it does seem ridiculous but how are you going to pay for the Military in California? 99% of it is merely accounting tricks with 1's and 0's now....but it is the most complicated shite in the world to try to comprehend why I send Washington a check for $15K and they send me a check back for $1500 (or something to that effect).

Of course if it weren't done in this manner states like Mississippi and Louisiana (and almost all red states) would be shite out of luck....they would send their money to Washington and wait for months at the mailbox for the check coming back and all they would get is a bill for more money owed....
