The overwhelming majority of California less than 10 miles from the coast is A/C free. That's probably close to half the state population. ...

They still do have "alerts" but smog isn't an issue for most angelenos. The last stage 3 smog alert in the city of LA was over 40 years ago. The last stage 2 alert was over 30 years ago. That may be true where you live but in many cities, like where I live, that affords typical suburbia around 1,500 square feet or a condo in the city around 900 square feet. ...

Not as familiar with Houston but in general this is terrible advice. Being close to work is indeed a quality of life issue. Two hours a day in a car means spending 15-20% of your life in a car, not counting sleep. ...
