Yeah but those shaded areas aren't exactly diverse.

Larger cities tend to have more diversity. It's not good or bad, and there are exceptions to everything.

So half of all US citizens live in liberal cities. How can there be such a disconnect between rural and urban America?

What is it about Urban America that makes people more liberal and vice versa?
The disconnect seems to have been more exteme than usual, but I think these red/blue maps make this disconnect more exteme because of the population density and the binary representation of a variable that had a lot of variability.

For example, I live in one of those counties, and both Obama (2012) and Hillary got about 60% of the vote. So if I come across 10 voters from my County, I'll be expected to meet about 6 people who voted for Obama, as opposed to about 5 nationally.

You're right, these maps don't paint the whole picture.

Even though half the population are in these counties, that doesn't mean they are all liberals.

Also, the color of the shade on this map is not indicative of a political affiliation, it was just the color used.

Being around so many people. There is a bigger perceived need for government.

I mean its also human nature to be around people with your interests and its even more biologically natural to want to be around species that look like you. Even in grade school people formed little bubbles with the other kids that shared their same views and become "best friends". I dont think people lose those fundamental values so to speak. Its learned through evolution to form tribes.

I see Collin and Williamson counties in TX. Hardly liberal.. just a quick glance at the map I'm sure there are others.

is this serious?

So 12-14 percent of the total US population means they are 12-14 percent in every county? are you serious?

Take a closer look, the majority of these counties are going to have a far higher than 12% black population I would wager.

To the OP....

The reason they are so liberal is this -- successful whites surrounded by poor blacks feel GUILTY.

Poor blacks surrounded by anything hate whitey aka republicans.

It is not rocket science people.

You sure that map is correct?

Texas voting map

Dallas county is a liberal shithole, but white flight is moving to Collin County. Collin County will actually be larger than Dallas County in population very soon.

Tarrant County will never be fricking Liberal.

You think southern California, southern Florida, and the north east have a much higher than 12% black population?

More diverse areas are usually more liberal. They have no choice but to be tolerant of others beliefs, religion, race, etc. People in smaller towns are closer knit and more likely to not want change or outsiders. They feel threatened.

THIS! 1000%!

Also, people who live in cities rely more on, and understand the benefit of, public services and infrastructure. In a big city, you NEED things like well-maintained streets, garbage pickup, hospitals, public transit, etc., things that rural folks don't necessarily care as much about or need. If the government shuts down or runs out of money, you feel it really quickly in a city, but in rural areas it sometimes isn't felt until the agricultural subsidy checks and loan guarantees, disability and welfare checks for the poor, etc. don't come, which usually takes longer. Realizing the value of such services, people in cities tend to be more willing to pay taxes to have them. This is apparently a liberal concept in the eyes of conservatives who think government is an unnecessary burden, or at best a necessary evil, except when it's subsidizing their farms, bailing out their banks, loaning money to their businesses, etc.

This map is simply a representation of population density. It doesn't speak anything to political affiliation. The political affiliation of the major cities include in the map was my own addition to the topic.

Poverty
Minorities
Federal employees
The 18-30 crowd

All concentrate in large urban centers and all tend to skew heavily democrat on Election Day (as a gross generalization).

That will never happen. You're confusing city of Dallas with Dallas county.

And I'll add that gentrification and high rent in places like uptown and east Dallas is pushing minorities out to the burbs.
