Scum

quote:

Atheist author Richard Dawkins provoked a firestorm Wednesday on Twitter by claiming an unborn baby with Down’s syndrome should be aborted and that it would be “immoral to bring it into the world.”

...

Irish Catholic Aidan McCourt tweeted in return to Dawkins, “994 human beings with Down’s syndrome deliberately killed before birth in England and Wales in 2012. Is that civilised?”

“Yes, it is very civilised,” Dawkins responded. “These are foetuses, diagnosed before they have human feelings.”

Dawkins later added, “Learn to think in non-essentialist ways. The question is not ‘is it human’?’ but ‘can it suffer?’”

When InYourFaceNewYorker tweeted, “I honestly don’t know what I would do if I were pregnant with a kid with Down’s syndrome. Real ethical dilemma,” Dawkins returned, “Abort it and try again. It would be immoral to bring it into the world if you have the choice.”

I know plenty of DS parents and DS children. I wouldn't say their life has been a waste.

I think we should abort Richard Dawkins.

If you've ever been around a Down's kid, you'd know that they often represent the best of humanity.

Yea the immoral part is insane. But, I don't have a problem with someone choosing to abort.

Suffering is an idiotic point to make. There's ways to kill anybody without suffering. That doesn't make it suddenly okay

Wow. Dawkins is a true beacon of morality so we'd better listen up.

Do we decisively know the answer to the "can it suffer" question?

I want to know what is so magic about the door through which "fetuses" become "babies" that on one side they can't feel pain or suffer and on the other side they can.

It's not immoral, at all, to bring them into the world. But I really don't know what I'd do.

Except that SH does not have DS and was totally normal at birth.

Not interested in defending RD, he can take care of himself. Many will have passionate beliefs on this topic and all are entitled to their opinions.

Just not sure how your comment relates to his comment.

And this is the problem with trying to extrapolate scientific knowledge into a moral system.

I am not sure, for someone that believes in 'selfish genes' why there is any justification for not killing Down's syndrome kids after they are born.

Why not? No referencing God, or any kind of existential moral order in your answer.
