Had a nice one for 20 years. About 8 inches tall, made of wood. It broke last month so I just chucked it and bought something at Wal-Mart. It's was a plastic POS. Threw it away.

I don't want to go to a kitchen specialty store because they won't let me actually grind pepper to test it out.

What is your recommendation on a pepper mill that I can buy online. TIA.

You might be overthinking this purchase.

I stand by my posts in this thread. Maybe Zilla will come around and let you know how he's enjoying his PepperMate.

Are you sure? I've definitely ground pepper at places like Sur la Table and Crate and Barrel. Not sure if those are the types of "specialty stores" you are referring to though.

This may help. Until you decide, go to your grocer and buy one of these for both salt and pepper. Grinds nicely and throw away when you finish or refill it and keep on going.

Cheap and serviceable

I have a Peugeot that I really like, I think it may have come from Williams-Sonoma.

For years, I had a PepperBall like this: LINK
It had adjustable grind, easily ground pepper w/one hand. Then I dropped it into a pot of cream soup. Not recoverable...so now I have the standard twist kind, but I have been meaning to replace it with another pepperball.

I second a Peugeot. I've had mine for 2-3 years and have been pleased with it. In fact, I have an identical salt mill that I don't use anymore that I'd be glad to part with if you're interested

While not the most attractive, the Ikea spice grinder is a great price and my favorite to use. Very high output volume and good grind control with ceramic burs.

Ikea Ihardig Spice Grinder $5.99

We like ours. Very sturdy and you can adjust the size of the grind.

I've had a Unicorn for many years. Works very well. My only ding is that the fill-hole is easy to accidentally open. I finally got my grip adjusted to avoid that and the related peppercorn spill.

Before it, I threw them away about once a year. Many sorry ones are out there.

Alton Brown sold me on it. Cooks Illustrated likes it too.

This is what I currently use. Although I cannot seem to get a course grind no matter what setting it's on, it doesn't fail. Order it on Amazon

I have the PepperMate that gris mentioned, pretty sure I bought it due to that thread she linked. I got it for about $30 on Amazon and would definitely recommend it.

My oldest one still goes from fine to coarse very well. On occasion, I turn it in the wrong direction wen changing the grind.
They were 50 bucks not all that long ago.
