It's apparently because the student-faculty ratio is too high.

I graduated from that program. When I was there, there were about 40 people per graduating class. All classes were held in one room in PFT/CEBA, and there was one section of each course offered only once a year. Out of curiosity, I just checked the class schedule on LSU.edu. Now, there are classes in Lockett auditoriums with 300+ people;multiple sections for each class; and the the same amount of faculty as when I was a student, in a department with 8x the amount of students!

Something needs to give. They need to stop letting anyone in. UT and A&M restrict the amount of students that can enter the program. LSU should do the same to remain credible.

Sounds like they are just making your degree less important which sucks!

The Chemical Engineering department at Alabama is in a similar position in terms of student to faculty ratio (not sure about the accreditation aspect). I agree on the capping solution.

The state would rather spend money on consulting contracts.

Engineering at LSU is still a priority school for recruiting at Schlumberger. I would hate to see anything change that.

Did you read the article? ABET doesn't have specific requirements for a student:teacher ratio, but does play into consideration. Pres. Alexander was using the department as the strong example of why the state needs to take a look at the budget plans for growing programs to the state senate.

The state needs to properly fund its damn flagship university or allow LSU to raise tuition to balance its budget without the approval from the legislature

I find it very frustrating

Isnt the PE program top 10 in the nation? This backwards state refuses to fund things at an appropriate level. Until our priorities get in order we will be last in the good things and first in the bad things....

Eh idk. I do know a lot of people with the major though. Few actually finished in it. I applaud them, sounds like a bitch.

According to ABET's website, there are only 17 accredited (though now I guess it's 16) bachelor's programs in petro engineering. So I would be surprised if y'all weren't top 10, but a program could be 10th and they're below average.

And film credits. Don't forget film credits. Because being an extra in a movie crowd scene is so much cooler than that boring engineering shite.

I graduated from it in 2012 and my brother this December. There are way too many students IMO. They did add gpa requirements to the major to weed out some people.
