Makes sense. I asked because I'm starting the MS geol program at LSU in the fall. I didn't really look into ULL at this point because where I am with work/life LSU was best option. I'm hoping their ADG program is as good as it sounds and I'll get out of it as much as I can. Good luck to you

ADG at LSU is really good. I'll see you there in the fall.

I looked into ADG, seems pretty legit with LSU working with outside companies, but honestly I wanted as many part-time jobs in my field as well as internships. Baton Rouge wasn't going to get me that, and after graduating with a BS and not having any prospects because I had no internships and such, ULL became the clear choice.

I don't know a whole lot about Kinsland honestly. Hear some good things, but a lot of bad too.

Good deal. You still going for your MS? I thought you had graduated. My mistake

Don't meet on it until the fall. I'm getting away from geo this whole summer so I can go out with a bang next year.

I graduated in 2010 with MS.
Now back for PhD

I'll find out this later this summer, I start at LLOG in July and I would like to see if I could use their information and data.
I would imagine they have most of their data from the the MS Canyon area.

Proprietary data are nice to work with...it makes it harder for people to ask you questions.

. I even have an email I sent a friend joking about how there were 240 people signed up for one class..now that class only shows 107. Maybe the course scheduling app is buggy.
I had 45 people in statics at UNO(also 2 sections)
We had probably 35 who finished out the class

The department is not endanger of losing accreditation. That won't happen. The school is using the PetE department to highlight underfunding.
When I was in school, there were plenty of weed out courses- Statics, Thermo, etc. If you can pass thermo, diff eq, dynamics, etc. you can pass petrology...
As a PetE you take a subsurface mapping course, rock properties, fluid properties and well logging in the PetE dept. You also take the two general geology classes/labs and a geology elective. It's not hard to pick up geology minor.
As previously stated, the department is maxed out on hours. There are engineering core compentencies they must meet for ABET accredidation. The fact of the matter is that there isn't enough time to fully cover all of petroleum engineering and make everyone an expert, but a bachelors degree gives you a foundation. The majority of what you learn is on the job, which is normally the case.
As for not seeing a rig, most companies don't want a bunch of students on location because they are liability. With how many freshmen and sophomores drop out, I think junior year is fine. You've had enough classes to finally have an idea whats going on. In my opinion, its your job to get a summer job to further your exposure. The dept, does a good job helping students find work. If you dont get one through the dept, you need to look. I wouldn't hire a student fulltime without an internship/summer job.
I can honestly say that LSU prepares you just as well, if not better than other PetE programs. That's based on new hires and interns that I have been around. Montana Tech and Tulsa are usually better prepared at production. A&M is better at Reservoir. CSM is better at frac. LSU has the best drilling program.
The other problem the department is having, on top of the number of students, is hiring good PhD staff. The university is competing with industry and other schools. The university pays a lot less than what the professors could make if they left.

Agreed on the drilling program. Dr Smith is a top notch professor, and the well control school and blowout lab is something no other school has, as far as I can tell.
