They did have a rediculous number of graduates though.

How many of those grads will end up not working directly in their field?

TigerHam I'm actually heading over there in the fall to start my Master's.

I took a trip to meet some of the professors last back in April but Dr. Lock was in Houston for IBA, I'll be heading back in two weeks to try and meet up with him to shoot the shite.

You doing MS or BS at ULL right now?

ETA: Just read your quote about Lock leaving, that sucks, I was hoping once I got settled into my thesis to have him on my committee.

What classes have you had with 200 in them?

And of course there are a ton of freshman in all engineering disciplines and then they get weeded out.

I took statics as a ME back in the beginning. They had about 200 in that one.

I contributed to the ME drop rate after that. When your statics class is taught by the women's powerlifting coach, who is a horrible teacher other than that, I was done.

I don't doubt that but I'm talking about PETE classes.

What made you pick ULL over LSU after going through undergrad in BR? Faculty/program at ULL better or just a change?

Granted I don't know exactly what goes into using your PetE degree in the real world but the required geology courses they have right now is a absolute joke. General concepts of oil entrapment/formation etc is based in geology, removing it is PetE I would imagine. But I can't see these kids knowing all they need to know about geology by taking the first basic level class and the lab.

When I was in the PETE dept, the required course were physical geology and lab, historical geology, Subsurface geology, and a 3000 or 4000 level geology elective...so it was actually 5 courses, not 2.

Still don't remember shite though They could make you take 10 classes..but it's hard to retain geology info (or anything you learn in class for that matter) if you aren't doing that for your job.

Ok, you are right (I think, anwyay). I just checked the course schedule. I swear when I checked it a month ago it was different. I even have an email I sent a friend joking about how there were 240 people signed up for one class..now that class only shows 107. Maybe the course scheduling app is buggy.

At any rate, there's too many people in the department. If this keeps up, it's gonna be a miniature law school effect for petroleum engineers.

There's just talks of Lock leaving. Don't worry about it, because he is teaching in the fall and doing IBA next year. He loves this shite.

Take every Lock class you possibly can. The man is a geo genius and you'll learn more from 1 of his classes then you will all you other classes combined.

I'm doing MS. Got my BS from LSU.

I'd like to have him direct my thesis, as both of my uncles did theirs under him and recommended it. It just depends on how long he's here for.

I'm not on campus at all this summer, so maybe I'll catch you in the fall.

Like someone said earlier I was looking for a good O&G geology program.

Other than a handful of people saying ULL is a great O&G Geology school. I spoke to a professor on my visit there. He talked about how back in the 60s every college in LA had a geology program. Over time LSU grew more and more and everyone wanted to go to LSU for geology. All these programs washed out except for ULL (and I believe UNO still has one). But he went over that ULL kept their program alive because they specialized in O&G, specifically because of the demand around Lafayette, as well as the country, for Petroleum Geologists. I also looked at ULL's courses for geology, and they are much more O&G specific than LSU.

LSU, as explained before, is most concerned about research. Its a good place as a stepping stone to a PHD or as a place where you can study whatever you want, it's very broad in scope of course work. ULL is heavily based on O&G pertinent courses.

From first hand experience and from many others knowledge, geologists never truly learn anything.

She wasn't bad. She was 10x better than the korean guy I took my first go round with statics.

Also, if lock is gone, you'll just have to settle for Rieke.

The ME department is just as bad, if not worse in this respect. I had to explain the difference between a nut and a bolt to two people in my group in the drafting class. Absolutely no idea what goes on in the real world.

IIRC, they wold me that they let 750 in as ME freshman, and cut it down to between 100 and 150 for graduation. I had three separate teachers tell me that they have goals of # of students left at the end of each semester, and that's how they would curve at the end of the class(they all curve)

For my first degree, I graduated with 4 people. Was awesome because the teachers were 100% involved and 100% dedicated to making us learn the material. I don't know of any other major that the teacher would call you in front of the class if you were late or didn't show up one day

What's the word on Dr. Kinsland over there. He hung with us on my trip over and he works in the area I'm looking at.

I don't doubt there's too many people in PETE but have you looked at the future of the O&G industry? You'd have to have hundreds of graduates a year for 10+ years to worry about oversaturation.
