Will American football ever make it in the Olympics?

I'm not saying 4 or 8 years from now, but maybe 16-20.

Only if NFL players aren't allowed to play.

But no.

Roger Goodell won't allow it.

Uh...no.

Olympics won't add a sport unless it's competitive and played globally.

(See dropping Women's softball)

(Yet see..WTF! all those Norwegian weird cross-country events that - it's cool if only 4 countries take it seriously.)

And see World Championships in American Football - where people like Dan Hawkins' son lead a US team of NFL rejects in blowout victories over Japan and Canada.

So - no.

American football - will never ever ever ever ever be an Olympic sport because there won't ever be 10 countries playing it at an NFL level.

Let alone a Division I collegiate level.

Doubt it. Nor do I think it ever should. But ever is a long time.

No way, for a variety of reasons.

From a practical standpoint the Olympics simply aren't long enough. You need at least 4-5 days in between games. So no round Robbin for sure, and 4-6 teams max. The Olympics wouldn't be down for such an exclusive sport.

No chance. Honestly any decent college team would destroy the best any other country would put on the field

Unless they extend the Olympics to one or two months, no way. But at that point, it'd just turn into the World... American Football Cup?

No.

The sport needs to be global, particularly if it is a team sport - especially one that requires such large rosters. The logistics in getting all those games in would be a nightmare.

They may not be playing American football here in 20 years.

Sadly no. No country would stay within 50 points of us.

I would love to see a game between our college all-stars vs a world team though.

Hell, they don't even have baseball in the Olympics anymore, and that's actually played outside of the U.S.

NEVER in the olympics. And I bet there will never be any world cup competition for it either we are the only people who play it.

isn't rugby coming to 2016 summer olympics?

re: Will American football ever make it in the Olympics?

No:

1. Too few countries play it

2. It takes way too long.

3. Players are throwing a fit over the NFL schedule. What would they do with 5+ games over two weeks?

It was actually a demonstration sport at two Olympics. There is a group that is trying to get it added by 2024 or so.

If the US host another games anytime soon I don't think it's even made a demonstration sport. I think they would be more likely to add baseball.

Way back in 1932 when the NFL was in its infancy. American tackle football will never take internationally because of the injuries, especially head injuries.
