So, the girls wanted a nice weekend out. Since it was the eldest's birthday we decided to take them to a pair of very old NOLA institutions. This was my first time at Antoine's a restaurant that I have been meaning to get to for years and years.

It isn't really talked about on here, but from Facebook responses I can see that it has fans in the uptown and Old Metairie crowds.

We ordered from the specials menu, which is not a Restaurant Week exclusive, had I known that I may have went elsewhere.

I fretted bringing kids, because I never saw any reviews mentioning kids.

I decided to make a reservation and ask for one of the smaller rooms. I lucked out and got the private 1840 room.

I felt like I was eating in a museum.

(the Duck Press used in the No Reservations episode)

I can see it can be dreary to some, but I preferred it to the main dining rooms (not my pics)

There are 15 dining rooms and a 30,000 bottle wine "cellar". There is also a closed off former speakeasy.

Proteus room

Okay on with the review...

specials menu

The waiter was a very nice fellow by the name of Eddie who gave me his card at the end of the meal. He has been there since 1979. Apparently it's not easy to get a job waiting tables there.
He recommended Shirley temples and Chicken tenders with Brabant potatoes for the kids.

They enjoyed them, though their meals with drink and dessert were a little more than our meals.

Antoine's Kid's meal

Birthday girl enjoying her colors and shirley temple. I thought it was nice that they were given colors and kids options. I had no idea of this going in.

The table was very big for a group of four, it was like "Batman"(1989) where you had to get up to pass the bread.

Like the movie, she had the Vichyssoise.

and I had the Oysters 1-1-1. The Thermidor was okay, the Rockefeller a little better but the Bienville was the best of the three. But three oysters is a snack, not an entree, lol.

I liked the flavor of our entrees, but they weren't as pretty as one would expect in a fine dining scenario. (around this time a tour went through and a guy was wearing shorts and a t-shirt and the littlest says "Look he isn't dressed right, look" I felt bad, but really who goes to a nice place in Shorts and nikes?)

Anyway, our entrees

Pork Provence
Pork tenderloin with an andouille crabmeat stuffing served over Yukon mashed potatoes with a champagne sauce

Veal Burgundy
Panned veal with a burgundy Espagnole sauce served over Florentine rice

I thought both tasted very good, but the missus thought the kids chicken fingers were better.

I had the bread pudding

and she the cheesecake

Really at $20.13 it was a good deal for three courses.
But even with 25 cent martinis the bill came to $92.

Which wasn't bad at all for the service and the ambiance. I get many wouldn't like the place. It is weird having tours go through while you were eating. And people taking pictures in the room while you were eating. I made sure not to take pictures in rooms people were eating in.

They had some cool stuff though

T-P from the day prohibition ended

FDR, Carter, Clinton and W sat in the room I dined in. That was cool.

(FDR ate there a few times as he had a few pics on the wall o fame. which was mostly up to the 60's, not many new pics)

Glassware from the Napoleon Empire.

All in all I thought it was worth it. It was far from the best meal I have had in the city and far from the worst.
It helps trying to break the kids away from Applebee's and Olive Garden (even if they are better on the wallet)

Though, there are changes that could be made to make it more appealing.

I want to return for dinner to get a better idea of the food.

Nice. Thanks for the work.

I'm a sucker for bread pudding and that looked divine.

I've never been either, but its (now higher) on the list. I love the historical aspect, I didn't know this about it

Yeah the presentation wasn't good at all. The flavor was good. But my expectations weren't that high for a three course for $20, I mean that's less than Applebee's

It's been in the same family since 1840. Six generations. Moved to this location in 1846.

The Hermes bar area was really nice too/

I didn't get any pics of the speakeasy. There was a small door in one room that led to it.

also upstairs was closed.

They have a room up there called the Japanese Garden, that they closed in 1941 and didn't reopen until the World's fair.

Eddie is "my waiter", he loves to give out his business card to try and get repeat customers who will request him, but I think he does a good job overall.

It's great that you were able to treat your children to a nice lunch. I'm sure they enjoyed the experience.

Only problem was they ordered like there were back at Applebees. Did they try your plate?

The adult plating was truly dreadful. I'm no fan of Antoine's but that is unacceptable for fine dining. Was that sprinkled parsley around the plate? SMH.

he did a good job. He also practically begged me not to tip with a credit card.
Which I don't mind after he told me they wait two weeks for their tips from CCs.

Yeah first time I have had a servers card.

I should have got the tour of the back waiter who led the tour. He knew so much that we left our tour waiter and got in his group. I felt like I was at a museum.

it looks like the just threw a clump of parsley on the plate. I am not a fan of the plating at all. Same thing I told Gris when she asked me about the place. The entree plates did not look good to the eye.

The kids are picky, neither will tuck crap, but both ate the veal and liked it.

Hey I was just glad they liked the Brabant potatoes. Also they really weren't given a choice, the waiter suggested it and we just said okay. The oldest wanted a salad and soup.

It's a really cool place for sure. The food has gone downhill IMO, but I still enjoy going around the holidays when its pretty packed. It can be very depressing when its empty, like you alluded to with the Batman comment.

they had a good crowd, the annex was mostly full, as was the main room, the snail and rex rooms, and the dungeon.

Where I had my rehearsal dinner. Antoine's always does parties better than regular service.

Very nice and informative review Nap.

Is that a typical thing? I've never worked in the service industry. I thought the usual drawback was having to claim those CC tips as taxable income, but a two week holding period ?

Some places do it. But honestly, that's like the rest of us having to wait to get paid. They shouldn't be complaining about it or pressuring customers to tip with cash.

Absolutely unacceptable for a waiter to have this discussion with a patron. And one of many reasons why Antoine's will soon go the way of Brennan's.

He didn't "beg" but mentioned he preferred cash. And the two week hold.
But yes, it was weird to me, IMO a waiter should never discuss a tip with the patron. But everything was good, service was good and he deserved 20%. I only had a 20 on me so at $92, he got a lil over 20%. But it was fine.

My biggest issue was the look of the entrees, they (especially mine) did not look like I would expect. With dinner entrees in the $40s-60s I wonder what the plating is like then. Yes it did look like the kids plated the parsley.

Depressing plates. Even more depressing service. Those upstairs rooms are absolute fire traps.

Museum is the perfect description for the place. But I don't want museum food. (Unless it's Danny Meyer's The Modern at MOMA, which has an actual Michelin star).
