Last night Mr. Piggy and I were out, and they brought out our entrees about 30 seconds after our appetizer (neither runner was our waitress). I literally hadn't taken a single bite of the appetizer yet. Big pet peeve of mine, but what do you do?

If you send back the entrees, they'll probably just sit under a heat lamp. If I demand new entrees, I'm rather afraid of the kitchen doing something to them.

We ended up scarfing down the appetizer while the entrees sat there, and only tipped the waitress a little over 10%. I guess technically it's not her fault, but she knew we were getting an appetizer, she could have held off putting the entrees in the system. IMO, part of her tip is managing the overall experience.

What does the F&DB do in this situation?

Miz Piggy, I despise when this happens. It sort of depends on the nature of the restaurant. It rarely happens in a fine dining establishment. I fully expect something like this in a chain, for example, though it's been a while since I've eaten in one other than Zea.

I've sent back the entree, fearfully, but I've done it. I think it sits under a lamp as you say, so that's no good. I definitely comment on it and let them know I'm not happy, but I don't bother sending it back anymore. It doesn't happen much. Unless I'm in a hurry, I order an app and don't order the entree at that time to ensure that the problem doesn't happen especially if I know the restaurant is pretty quick on the draw. I've also told the waiter/ress that I prefer to have a bit of time in between courses and that generally works out.

But, I'm like you, it's highly disappointing to get them at the same time. It really affects my dining experience if I'm out to have a nice dinner somewhere.

Depends on the restaurant. If you are at a lower end chain then the servers may not be smart enough to manage the input to keep your app and entrees from coming out together. Anywhere even semi upscale should be able to handle that and you should expect them to do it right. My wife has the same pet peeve. She makes me complain if her soup comes out with her salad, so I know what you are talking about.

I agree with GG. it's one of my biggest pet peeves. I never send it back though. I will express my discontent though.

Just curious what you ordered for apps and entrees?

We went to Sammy's the other day and the same thing happened. Ordered cheese fries for our app. Wife and I had fried platters that come with house salads. Kids had shrimp and chicken tenders.

Next thing you know I'm finishing up cheese fries, while my salad is put in front of me, then two minutes later all the entrees come out, before I eat my salad.

I know that their model is turning tables but I was a server at one point and you have to know your kitchen (was boh as well), and the timing of your table with respect to placing an order. Even if that means fixing the house salad then waiting a few minutes before placing the entree order, you have to let the meal flow and not just pile food on the table. I always wanted to prebus empty plates before the next items came out.

Ultimately, it's not hard to do.

I don't mind honestly. My wife likes order multiple appetizers when we go out and eat. By the time we finish them, she's already done for the day and winds up taking her entree home. She wouldn't be able to enjoy the freshness of her entree by boxing it home and eating it later. So for me, it works out. I rather eat most of the entree and box home the appetizers.

It bothers me enough not to return to the restaurant after I've tried again, unsuccessfully, not to have a table full of food getting cold. Too many other places to go where I can eat without being rushed.

I never order my entree till after my app has arrived. I like to milk the time when dining out.

Same here. They wouldn't have to worry about serving me again.

Agree.
If you are at any place above the level of a Chilis, they should have enough sense to not screw up the situation by bringing an entrée right after they just delivered the appetizers. Especially bad if the app is a hot item.

Trick question. No member of the F&DB would ever admit to eating at an establishment that would do this.

FWIW Johnny's breadsticks always come out well before the pizza.

We rarely order apps, this is one reason, calories are the other. Ther exception is some places we order one app, one entree and split them. We never leave hungry.

This particular time it was a chain (rare occurrence for us) but we had it happen at the nice restaurant I chose for my last birthday. That time, the waiter didn't even apologize. At least the waitress last night apologized.

Doesn't surprise me with a chain (and there are some decent ones out there). Chains tend to want to turn tables quickly. Still shouldn't happen in my opinion, though. Should NEVER happen in a good fine dining restaurant, though. They're supposed to be fine tuned.

As far as service goes, there are two things that can annoy the shite outta me more than anything else...taking a long time to greet me after I've sat down, and my app and meal arriving on top of each other. It's infuriating for me.
