Not sure why some of you are having trouble acknowledging that this issue is a problem.
I will make it simple for you. If I order a bowl of soup and a nice fish entrée and they both come to the table at the same time, which are you going to let get cold?

I make sure to order the entree after we've received the app.
For fancier restaurants that know how to pace a meal, I order everything at once.

Pet peeve of mine also. You expect idiocy like poor food timing at a place like Chili's. But what gets me is literally every fricking Japanese restaurant on the planet will just bring out whatever whenever. You really have to time the food yourself at those places.

Maybe it's one of those shitty restaurants like the melting pot where they want you to make your own food and thought you liked fish soup.
I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but it sounds reasonable enough to me.

In the case where the app is served with the entree I usually say I don't want the app now.
I make them take the app back, and just eat the entree.

I've asked waiters at our favorite spots how to prevent this and usually all you have to do is ask. Make it clear about the timing within reason. I'm sure there are places out there that can't comprehend this request. Don't go back.

Same thing happenened to me last night.
It was after 8 and we not really hungry.
Ordered some gravy fries for an app.
Me and my kids each a cup of gumbo for our meal.
Wife wanted an app of fried catfish for her meal.
Waitresd brings out our bowl of cup of gumbo.
Then the catfish.
Then the gravy fries.
She completely messed it up, but we ate and moved on.
It was after 8 and we not really hungry.
