Have a 40 acre impoundment wt a small electric well on it. The well just isn't cutting it. What is the max hp an electric well can go to and how hard/much is it to convert the well to gas/diesel? I have no clue about wells, gpm, hp, etc. There are also 3 other impoundments I would like to flood wt the same well. This is only for duck hunting.

You want a propane engine driven well on it. Much cheaper to run.

How many acres total are you trying to flood? Converting to a diesel/propane may not help much. Depends on how good of a well it is. Some wells just aren't that good. They will surge if they aren't in a good formation. I would try to find out how good of water is there before spending a lot of money on a "dry well".

Electric is definitely the way to go. Much cheaper/ can't help you on the specs

iirc I worked at a paper mill that had 200hp well pumps. Might've been bigger than that.

So electric goes as big as you can afford

But if the water is not there he is wasting money. Think of it as having a prop that doesn't have enough pitch to match the HP on a boat. You get over-rev at full throttle. This is sorta like a well that surges. When they surge, lower the rpms. You have all that HP but it doesn't matter if the water is not there.

They gotta electric pump at the camp. That bastard floods a section of land in 3 days. They make em big enough I promise. If "the" camp was "my" camp I'm sure I could tell you everything you would wanna know but it's not.

I have had wells installed that flow up to 3500 gpm. The design of the well determines how much flow you can get. Things like diameter, screen length and area, and aquifer tranmisivity dtermine well capacity, not pump HP. Chances are are your well is probably designed at its capacity. Increasing HP will probably just cavitate the pump and the added pressure drop will just cause precipitation and fouling accross the screen. You can't just up the pumping rate without increasing the capacity of the well itself. If you want a reliable water source at significantly higher volume you'll need a new well designed for this purpose.

thanks fellas. looks like sectioning off smaller areas to flood is the way to go.

also, try to laser level it or at least water level it if you can. if you dont have to pump deep on one end it helps a lot

It all depends on your well's drawdown, basically how fast the well "refills" while you are pumping. If you stick too large of a pump in there, you'll just burn it up. You could look at a solar powered pump that just constantly runs (when the sun's out) without running up your electricity bill.

You really need to have the well pump tested. Then you will know what size pump to get. Do you have 3 phase power or single phase?

Yea, if you have 3 phase within a half of a mile you should always go electric. That is assuming you are planning to run the pump for several years. If it is on a duck lease then you could go generator. I have some neighbors that have 350 hp electric motors on well pumps. Talk about making a meter spin.

If you want to use gas or diesel all you will be doing is buying a generator to run the well pump. If you are pulling out of a well it is still going to be an electric pump.

We had one give 3600 gpm but 2 miles north of it we had another one that was pitiful. Can't remember the exact gpm on that one but the water table wasn't the same.
