Changing Spark plugs on 2004 F150

Was going to change myself but after a quick look theres no way! Called my regular auto shop and want $500 plus $100 for every plug that breaks and they claim will usually break 2-3. Ford dealer charges $620 plus $100 for every plug that breaks claim the same thing 2-3 plugs on average break.

Asides from the obvious design flaw of the plugs should I let my usual mechanic before work or forgo the extra cash and bring to dealer?

I hate bringing stuff to dealership as they get outrageous (Got suckered into a $300 bill for changing a thermostat once) also wanted to get a few other things done injector flush, alignment, etc. so all that will add up quick at the dealership!

I have changed the shite out of them.
I could do yours for half that if you're in the BR area.
I have the special tool set that extracts the broken plug tips from the head without removing the head.
It's a bitch though and I can guarantee you 7 out of 8 of those bitches will break.

BTW: I'm a A+certified Ford tech and ASE master tech.

A buddy of mine had the same problem. His mechanic sea foamed the truck first to break down carbon and didn't break any plugs.

This could very well happen. I'm not sure why, but if it does, they have to drill the remaining plug out. This is not something you want to attempt yourself.

that what my mechanic said we was going to do, wanted me to to bring it to him the day before and he was going to foam it and let it sit overnight

re: Changing Spark plugs on 2004 F150

Some of the designs on a few of the Ford vans are similar, not easy at all to change the plugs. I thought I saw something not too long ago on this subject on the internet. It either had something to do with a recall or maybe a special tool Ford dealers had to deal with this problem. But it did make it sound like it was a pretty common problem.

Even though the dealer would cost more that's where I would go. If someone screws up and that broken plug drops you could be in a much worse situation.

Whatever you do, don't do it yourself. The special tool that the mechanics have defiantly helps but they even break the majority of them

I've only had seafoam or deep creep work twice for me.
The other 20 trucks I did it had zero effect and still broke over half the plugs.

all the ones i've done have broken too. going by Ford TSB doesn't work good either. Champion makes a replacement plug that's a solid one piece that won't break. Champion is Meh though unless it's a chrysler product. I have the extractor tool in the bottom draw of my box for quick access. best 80 bucks i've ever spent.

Going with the one piece champions is the only way to go and I will not put another 2 piece plug back in someones truck even thought the champions are twice the cost.

it really can't drop based on the design.
it's slightly cone shaped and it's slides into a slot and get seized in there. I put anti seize on the smooth area when I go back in with them.

yeah, I agree. Most of the rednecks around here are too cheap though.

That seems to be a poor design.
