Headed to the smokies this weekend. Going to fish the litter river again, hopefully water temps are cooler and the hurricane doesn't cause us to get rained out. Any fall flies that will work good?

Also, any idea of the cheapest place to buy park approved firewood?

I can't help much on the flies, other than that I'd expect the large stimulator dries with a little yellow will probably still work. I was able to get some heat treated wood from the gas station between Townsend and the park a month ago. Not exactly cheap but it had rained and was dark. I found my own wood for free the next day

As I mentioned to the other fella, this time of year I almost always end up back into my "general use" flies due to the lack of a major hatch. It's still warm enough that terrestrials (def try some green weenies) are going to get some good action but generic nymphing stuff (WB, midges, PT, hares ear) are going to get the job done too. My plan in these situations is to have a good supply of these and switch up every 15 casts until I find something that is consistently getting hits

Also - any place you fish that you know is used by guides is guaranteed to have websites with reports on them. Find the reports and look up what flies they're using. If nothing recent try to find a guide with archived reports and go back to about this season for previous years and see what those reports said

That is some pretty good advice. I do something similar this time of year. This weather is driving me crazy, any time I get some time to go on a little trip by myself the heat is just out of control. Supposed to be friggin 86 in both Broken Bow and Arkansas. Last time I went was a couple of weeks ago and I got skunked because of the heat. I am reluctant to go try again.

link to sale

FYI for those of you who don't get the emails. Allen is closing out their clothing pretty damn cheap. I've got that soft shell and really like it. It's not the best one ever made but it's a steal at $50. Plus it's a great shade of maroon, which most of you need more of in your lives.

I have been plugging Allen a ton to the fly shop here in Dallas. Allen is right there in Southlake and I think their products would sell like hotcakes at Tailwaters. Don't know why they haven't collaborated yet.

According to their website they have some dealers all around the country, and they look similar to Tailwaters.

Didn't realize that. Would love to be able to pick up their stuff at backwoods.

Been busy post-flood so I never got to chime in about y'all hitting up Cat, but if y'all are still going, enjoy it, man. It was a special place 10 years ago, hope it's still the same

Have been really busy last month or two so I haven't fished much at all! Got out today and went after some carp.

I think I might want to get either a polling platform or at least a casting deck for my boat. Questions for folks that do this: would it be too difficult to get a removable deck and/or platform for a 16 ft aluminum duck boat? If I can do this, would it be better to just stand up front if i'm fishing by myself? How hard would it be to poll and cast from a rear platform? I'm going to get more into this carp thing and will also be going over to the coast a bit for redfish.

Anyway, here's one of the fish I caught with a weird looking eye.

Has anyone here fished the tailwaters below Greers Ferry Lake? Any tips on places to stay, access points, etc?

I was checking access points on the Little Red couple months ago, and noticed there were several places on the river listed on VRBO. I took info for this one. JJ's Riverhouse
VRBO# 656332 (501)206-8065. This place was a few miles below dam. If you are wanting to go hotel route, look for places in Heber Springs. Let me know how you do if you make it up there. Think I'm going to forgo chasing deer this weekend to break in a new 3wt I've had for a month now that has yet to land a trout.

I have never thought I needed a platform to spot carp. Once you know what to look for finding mudding carp is easy. I'm also way lazy to pole when I have a trolling motor.

What did you get that grass carp on? I have only ever targeted common and mirror carp

Both were on a black stonefly

I want to find more common carp on these lakes but am having trouble and I don't know where else to look. I think the common carp will be easier to fool based on what I've read.

Finding these were easy b/c their tails were out of the water and there was a ton of them.

So as predicted, the wind has been pretty much awful. The trip has been sick though. Not too many big fish. Pretty much everything has been in the 2-5lb range with a couple over 5.

I got my personal best bone today. Didn't have a scale, but he measured at 28" and had some serious shoulders, so I'm hoping he was between 9-10. He ate in like 4" of water 8' away from me. His whole back was out of the water and my my leader was in my guides when he ate. One of the more intense fishing experiences of my life .

Then he wrapped me around the only mangrove in the middle of this giant arse flat, so I sprinted across the flat after him with my rod over my head in both hands like some type of geriatric giraffe screaming at him. Freed the line from the bush, fought him for a little while longer, then saw how big he was and had to remind myself that I was on planet Earth. 3x backing fish. I was stoked ha.

I had to wade across a neck deep creek to get to that flat, and my pops wasn't feeling the wade, so I didn't have a photog haha. I was a little bummed, then a little pissed at myself for being bummed. I took some shitty pictures with my iphone, so I'll post one later. Here are some photos from the rest of the trip so far. My dad got his first bone on day 2, and got his first totally on his own today.

^ That's my pops about to land his first bone ever. He hooked up, I was 200 yards away, and I just ran as fast as I could with my camera and started shooting. Turned out to be one of my favorite photos I've ever taken.
