Where are you headed? I also may make a trip over New Years.

eta: I think I wound up with a 3.5 fish/day average over 4.5 days fishing, with my best day being 6 and my worst day being 1. No zeros and I found a lot of fish.

This trip was a solid success, especially considering the calmest day we had was 15mph with 20mph gusts. Most of our fishing was in 20-25, with the 1 fish half-day coming on a 25-30 day. That was ridiculous. That day, I got the point where I told myself if I caught a fish and avoided a zero, it was beer time. So as soon as I landed a fish, I got off the flat. Lesson learned: if it's blowing >25, it's beer time.

Also caught a couple cudas and smaller sharks. Broke off a bigger cuda. I was really hoping to get a trigger this trip. I had an eat on our last trip, but didn't connect. We saw one trigger the entire trip, and he was off the beach and I never got a good shot at him. Bummer, but next time.

Dad struggled a bit but caught a few. Overall not bad for his first time and he got significantly better as the week progressed. The learning curve was amplified x10 by the wind. It's tough to learn how to cast at bonefish with wind like that.

Posting this here because page ended.

Here are a couple other photos from our trip:

Pops slowly figuring out what DIY bonefishing is all about . This was about as deep as I could get him to wade.

Turks & Caicos NYE(Wife's fam) and Exuma(3 married couples) in March. Went to T&C last year and got a guide one day with my FIL, but not dropping $1k this time around because of Bahamas trip. If anyone is ever looking for a guide on Provo T&C I fished with Will Vallely (NE transplant) and he was the man, dude knows his fishery.

Exuma is tough to fish on foot.

Awesome. Keep me posted about that Turks trip. I love the Out Islands for my own trips, but I think they're a little too quiet for my family.

Bummer. I bought DIY Bonefishin by Rod Hamilton. He says a lot of it can be accessed by small boat/kayak. I think our house comes with kayaks. Would you recommend kayak/rent small boat or Guide? If we go guide route any recommendations? For reference one of the guy fly fishes but the rest do not.

I just looked on google earth and those Provo flats probably get hammered pretty hard too. I'd imagine most guide fishing in Turks would be on Middle or North Caicos.

eta: no doubt in part because of

Most of Provo is wildlife refuge. Was looking at hopping the ferry to North or Middle. There is a kayak/Sup rental on one of those two.

That dang Rod Hamilton . I really like the book though. Pretty good info and he gives you some ideas of what size flies to bring etc...

I'm convinced that book was written specifically to direct people away from good fishing spots.

No. Haven't fished it. I've been, but only to swim with the pigs.

It's a busy little island with lots to do. I would think the hustle and bustle of the island any flats that are easily reachable would be heavily fished. It's just too hard to figure out the bones if you only have a day, or maybe two to fish.

One could only hope.

Re: books like that, the problem with bones and DIY fishing is just that there are only so many places to fish for bones that are accessible on foot. I hear all the time, "how can you have pressured fish in the out islands of the Bahamas. Nobdoy goes there."

Some of the smaller islands may have 7-12 actual flats or creek systems worth fishing. Any fisherman worth his salt isn't going to fish a flat on consecutive days, so say you've got an average of one fisherman there per week throughout the year bouncing from flat to flat, exclusive of hurricane season. What you end up with is a bunch of really educated fish. Here in LA, we have an enormous marsh system, and the carrying capacity of anglers is much higher than a place with only a few legitimate places to fish. Couple that with the science that a lot of bonefish are fairly local fish depending on surrounding environment, and that leaves you with fish that are very susceptible to fishing pressure.

Full disclosure: I do not have a ton of experience bonefishing, but they're somewhat of an easy fish to figure out and they follow patterns. I 100% believe in fishing pressure and I avoid flats or creek systems (and marsh areas) that I think get hammered hard and often, but I also believe a lot of fishermen use the idea of "pressure" as a crux for their own inability to catch fish. Sometimes fish just don't bite.

It seems odd that someone would spend that kind of time and effort only to put his work out there for anyone to buy for $20. Maybe the idea is to get people excited about going and not having to worry about making those first few mistakes that everyone makes. At the very least it gives you geographical areas to look for elsewhere on the island as well as enough knowledge to be able to pick out mangroves, coral bottoms, and mud bottoms from google earth.

Can't talk to much shite, I read the stupid book

I think it basically started out as a log of his trips. Finally he hit enough areas and people started posting reports from their trips to other locales as well. After a while compiled enough info and figured he could prob sell this due to demand and info.

I agree. If I went through that kind of effort, there's no chance I'm broadcasting my spots to everyone. Not to mention there's a core older group of anglers that have been making those trips for decades without seeing another soul on the flats. I'm sure they're not too stoked about the influx of us younger dudes chasing "their" fish :lol.

Passive income to finance fishing trips. Not mad.

Seriously envious is a better phrase.

Would be a lot easier to convince the better half of another flats trip when you can justify as more research for vol 2

@Barf, you ever fished Long Island? We might go back for New Years and brief Google earthing shows some promising area. Also probably far enough south to stay out of the winter fronts.

No sir. I've looked hard at it but haven't made the trip yet. I just got some really good information on the Yucatan, I'm thinking that might be my Christmas trip.
