I've got an 18v Mikita combo kit that's maybe 8 years old. Impact driver is still kicking, but the drill is not 100% anymore. It also eats through batteries like nobody's business. I think I fricked it up when drilling maybe twenty 3/4" holes through some 16" creosote ties trying to fix a bridge. That was a rough day, but I don't think there are many cordless drills that could handle that

As long as you aren't drilling into anything tougher than mortar. That "hammer" is about useless in concrete with any real aggregate in it. The impact mechanisms simply don't generate the energy a proper rotary hammer does. I don't care if I have to run an extension cord but if I'm drilling concrete I'm using something taking SDS bits.

Agree, but it's only $10-20 more for the hammer drill, and you have a three-in-one tool instead of a two-in-one. IMO, worth the extra few dollars unless you "never" need to drill mortar.

Rigid is awesome stuff they fit my hand perfect and run like a dream.. the radio is indestructible look up the YouTube videos they run it over and bust cinder blocks on top of it throw it from roof tops.. Prolly don't need a radio but it's a testimony to how well ther stuff is made. And you can't beat batteries for life you will get 2 to 4 years out the bateries anyway

Totally agree with this makita set. Only problem is adding like a sawzall or a circular saw - the batteries are designed so that they will not fit those heavier tools as they will run the battery out quickly. The larger batteries will fit both.
There are always specials being run. You can't go wrong with dewalt , Milwaukee or makita . I have and use all three

The little square bag combo kits aren't bad but they are nothing special. Light weight and enough power but they aren't as durable as some of their other models. Had an impact come apart at the gear housing and wasn't worth ordering the parts to repair.

No clue on what brands to look at other than seeing dewalt plastered everywhere and having one. Suggestions?

Recently bought the PORTER-CABLE 2-Tool 20-Volt Max Lithium Ion Cordless Combo Kit with Soft Case and it came with a free bare tool to go along with it as a promotion so I picked the reciprocating saw. I then added to it with a jig saw and a bigger battery. VERY impressed so far. The saleman at Lowe's talked me out of DeWalt by explaining that DeWalt and Porter Cable are built by the same manufacturer just with different tags. Also, the PC batteries are cheaper than the DeWalt.

Also, FWIW, the "20V" batteries are really just 18V batteries. The biggest thing is to make sure you get a Lithium ion battery set. They charge way faster (the small batteries charge in 20ish minutes, bigger ones in about 45 minutes), they run at 100% and then die instead of gradually losing power, and they have no memory so you can charge them back to full power at any point and not harm the battery unlike the traditional batteries that last longer if you run them all the way down.

I don't get why people are always hung up on this. It's like saying a Jetta is the exact same thing as a Continental GT because VW owns them both

I don't like paying more for a product with negligible or no benefits other than the sticker on the side of it. And being owned by the same company and being manufactured in the same facility are different things entirely. It's more analogous to a Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra being produced in the same plant. The only difference is the badging. It's not that the two drills are owned by the same parent company, they're built by the same people in the same location using the same parts. Do they have small differences in appearance? Yes. Is their functionality different? No. Are you paying more because DeWalt has a bigger brand name? Yes.

I have the Kobalt drill driver/ impact combo set. I got it last year and it had the lithium ion battery as well . I think I paid 119 for the set. It does what it should. I just use it around the house.

Fair enough. Skepticism is warranted. I'm going off what the Lowe's employee told me and the brief side by side inspection I was able to perform at the store. I see no reason the salesman would have gone out of his way to talk me into the less expensive product unless he honestly thought it was a better or comparable item.

Regardless of whether or not it's identical to DeWalt, I am extremely happy with my Porter Cable set. It's extremely powerful, user-friendly, and convenient. The batteries last a good while and charge quickly. All of the tools feel rock solid and are comfortable to use. After handling them side by side with DeWalt, Bosch, and several other brands, I could detect no significant difference to justify spending any more money on a brand other than Porter Cable and in fact it was the brand I preferred over all others in comparing them, regardless of price point. Add in the fact that the batteries are cheaper, and the other tools in the line-up are cheaper and as or more highly rated than the other brand counterparts, and Porter Cable was the easy choice for me. If you're looking for a solid cordless tool line for around the house, I recommend Porter Cable.

If you live near Costco, go get the 20v Dewalt set there. It's the hammer drill and impact combo for like 220.

Why would you spend Makita or Milwaukee money on something you only use occasionally?
