Need a new drill for around the house and doing odds and ends.... any recs?
Posted by HebertFest08 on 7/27/15 at 8:09 pm00
I have never actually bought one, my dad gave me one that died and the FIL gave me a dewalt. The battery died on that one and i'm not paying $80 for a replacement battery. I'd rather just buy an up to date model so to speak. It would be for around the house stuff and for doing/building things around the camp. No clue on what brands to look at other than seeing dewalt plastered everywhere and having one. Suggestions?

I have a Dewalt 20v impact for heavy duty stuff and a 12v drill and Sawzall combo that get used often. No complaints out of any of them.
Btw, everyone is going to say that their shite is the best.

Saw some combo deals around July 4th from Ryobi and Porter Cable with Drill, Impact Driver and two batteries for $99. Look around and might see something similar, especially around Labor Day

If you are buying from a box store like lowes etc. brand doesn't matter much. For the money it's hard to beat the ryobi sets though. If you want a contractor grade tool buy a Dewalt from grainger or a lumberyard that caters to contractors. They are pricy, several hundred dollars for a cordless drill, but in my opinion they are hard to beat. When you see most of the guys that do contract work for a living buying Dewalt there is a reason.

My father in law gave me a Kobalt drill with a lithium ion battery and it works great. Stays charged for a long time and recharges very fast

I use the dewalt 20v lithium drill and impact for shite around the house. Probably more than what I need but they've got plenty of power and batteries last a good while. I'd buy another set of I had to for sure.

Check battery prices. Whatever you get you will wear out the batteries long before the drill. Lot of great drills mentioned, but if your just an occasional user you won't see the benifit nearly as much.

Just buy a replacement battery. You can get reconditioned ones on eBay. If it's an 18v drill, you really can't beat what you've already got. There's nothing wrong with Milwaukee and many others, but you are just deferring the same problem, eventually you will need to replace the battery with all of them.

Ive got the 18V makita combo set...drill/impact. Great battery life. Even better charging speed. And they've both got a nifty led light that comes on when you pull the trigger. You can usually find the set at home Depot or Lowes for about 225.

I prefer the DeWalt 20V lineup. Milwaukee isn't what it used to be. Take a look at a Milwaukee 12V vs a Craftsman 12V vs a Ridgid/AEG 12V. There's a reason they all share the exact same form factor. Milwaukee is owned by the same offshore that owns Ryobi, AEG, Ryobi, Homelite, Hoover, and a few others. Built to a lower grade standard than they used to be.

up to date model
For $80 battery you'd have an up to date model. I don't think technology for spinning a bit round and round has changed that much in the last 30 years. Battery technology has changed some but then you have to pay more for those technologically advanced batteries.

I have the Makita 18v Lithium...15 minute charge, and charge lasts every but as long as the old man's Dewalt drill. Both are great, but I like the fact I am back working in 1/4 time as he is when it comes to recharging.

Anybody have a Ridgid from Home Depot. I more interested in hearing any problems (if any) with the lifetime battery replacement.
