Except modern cordless drills use micro-controllers and act like variable frequency drives with feedback to manage the torque output and thermal management. Brushless versions are even more complex since they are converting DC to AC voltage.

Not a 12v dewalt, the pos I have is good for two 3" deck screws. I had to buy the Xp battery, one of the batts was bad from new.

I have the 12v 3/8 impact and sawzall, and have used and abused them for a couple of years with zero problems. I've thrown them, dropped off a 2 story house, run over one, etc. No problems.

I'm pretty hard on my power tools and have broken and burned up a lot of them

I bought the rigid set with 18 volt lithium ion impact and drill. I use it a lot and haven't had a bit of trouble. The lifetime service agreement is great just be sure to register in order to get it.

Me and a friend built a whole deck with his DeWalt 12V impact and my old 14.4V impact. That little thing drove 3" deck screws nearly as well as the 14.4V. If I didn't already have a set and just needed a handy drill/impact combo for around the house stuff I'd have no qualms over picking it.

I am a big fan of Bosch. I have three of their drills.

I agree with this, I've beat the hell out of my bosch tools and they are still preforming great.

It's ok with the $60 battery, but seems like it takes a dump before om done with small household projects, often.

No better than any of the other's mentioned. After getting bought out a few years ago they have basically been made non-competitive against DeWalt as far as cordless tools go. Some of the corded stuff is still pretty good and the 360-series belt sander is still one of the best available.

Cheap but good - Ryobi. IMO the best - Milwaukee M18 fuel. If you use your drill more for driving screws than drilling holes, consider a combination set that has a drill and an impact driver. You'll like the impact for driving screws. Also consider a hammer drill instead of a regular drill. For a few dollars more, the hammer drill also serves as a regular drill and a driver.

As long as you aren't drilling into anything tougher than mortar. That "hammer" is about useless in concrete with any real aggregate in it. The impact mechanisms simply don't generate the energy a proper rotary hammer does. I don't care if I have to run an extension cord but if I'm drilling concrete I'm using something taking SDS bits.

I have a small 10.6 volt (I believe that's what it is) Bosch nut driver and also an impact driver. I built a deck with them and they never had a single hickup.
That was about 8 yrs ago and they're still going strong.

The batteries on those little things last forever.

I've had the complete opposite experience. Have burned up 3 Bosch 18v drills so far. Bottom tier IMHO. In there with craftsman, b&d, porter cable, etc. Corded hammer drills are a different story. Up there with Hilti

I don't know about the new Ryobi stuff, but the old blue drills used to be pretty solid. Used to use them every day

As far as rigid goes, I have used a lot of their corded and cordless tools, and they are good. The triggers do tend to get worn out after a lot of use, but they still worked

Don't buy from Grainger. You will pay much more than at Lowes/Home Depot and it's the same tool.

the makita 18v impact/drill set in the blue bag
once you go impact for driving screws you never go back

200 bucks or so at the depot and the batteries last forever
plus they are compact and much less heavy

Yeah Bosch SDS Spline is all we use, we have some SDS Max hammer drills and I carry the small SDS in my truck for emergencies but the Spline is a beast

haven't seen a lot of love for Makita.... are they crap? I don't want to most expensive, but i also don't mind spending a few dollars to have something i won't have to worry about. Think i'm liking a combo of a drill and impact driver. I did use a guys Rigid stuff the other day while finishing up the walls in the camp and they felt and worked good..... but my dewalt is at least 7-8 years old so i'm not sure i was comparing apples to apples as far as for how they worked.
