The problem.....Son and I had a border collie walk on the stand that was in poor shape. We took him to the vet, took care of him for a week and made a 400 mile round trip to return to adjacent property owner. Heritage folks thought we exceeded our authority and had to go

Uhhhhhhhh...... what?

This thread has convinced me to keep hunting public land (5 deer last 2 seasons, I'll take it) until I buy my 300 acres outright.

Hunting clubs are like a bunch of jealous old ladies. They form cliques and always have to have some drama going on. I have seen good men voted out simply because they didn’t hang around the campfire at night enough.

The fact is, you weren’t popular with the group, so they voted you out.

Chances are you aren’t the first one this happened to in that club. Never see as much childish female like drama, gossip and chickenshit bull crap as you see sometimes in a poorly run deer lease. Been in deer and duck leases and in a duck lease everyone is happy when you hunt legal and kill what you hunt for. In a deer lease some act like they own the deer and pout like pussies when someone kills a buck. It’s either too small or too nice for YOU to kill.

Turns out you're right. While speaking to someone I work with he was familiar with the club because he hunted a a guest with one of his friends. His friends was asked to leave along with 3 or 4 others. Probably to clear out spots for some of their close friends.

Get some buddies, finance and buy your own land. Leases always end in heartache.

Talked to a guy that lost his lease of over 30 years up by natchez just because the timber company sold. 30 years of memories gone with a pen stroke. Now that dude doesnt have anywhere to hunt or bring his kids to hunt. Leasing is a losing proposition long term (more than 5 years or if you only have one lease).

this may sound wild - but our unwritten rule was only shoot something you want to put on the wall....that is what i was taught as a child..

Same way we operate

2-3 yr old 8 points are dime a dozen
If you need meat kill a doe.,, too many of them as it is.

If you hunt in a place place that sucks and you never see much then understand why you disagree

That rule while may be with the best of intentions is full of flaws.
I only shoot mature bucks, I have two mounted but will probably never mount another even if it’s bigger than my biggest (~155in) I still like chasing mature bucks and doing a euro is in my opinion just as much a a “trophy” of my hunt as a mount is.
I also hunt with a few guys that if you told them that they had to do is mount them all, they would fill up the back of a pickup truck with small bucks and laugh at 10k$ worth of taxidermy.

My goal is to just get the first one each year and be happy with anything probably up to 3. We eat it twice a week, it's better and better for us than beef. There are 6 of us and 3 boys are getting bigger, eating more each year. If we got a 4th this year it would have been the boy's first one vs. another due to meat needs.

Well that’s assuming you don’t have people that mount a scrub obviously

Yeah no doubt but that’s what rules are for.
I used to always wonder how some clubs had some of the craziest rules. Things like (dump your guts, don’t come in or out the woods till after 9-10am, no checking cameras during hunting times.
Our lease is pretty loose on rules but we all get along and help each other out and get excited for the other if one of us kills. We try to shoot mature bucks but one member is my buddies FIL and he’s almost 80 we let him shoot “a deer” each season and almost every other year it’s a spike or a yearling.
In spite of our management we are all happy for him knowing that each year that deer could be his last and that there’s more to life than trophy management.

Moved to AL 30+ yrs ago due to work. Leases & club were cheap . If had known then what I know now - buy property/ start equity club,
Problem is- improve habitat, harvest good bucks then family wants it back or timber co gets more $ .
Add lease , club cost , sweat equity , incidentals , see ya cost . Then look diligently for property in the right spot . Get a 30 yr farm loan & all the tax benefits - much more enjoyable & do what U want.
Did it 15 yrs ago & a few of my buddies did it 30 yrs ago - wish I had done that!
Good investment so might take a percentage of retirement/ 401K to make it work .
Most of us will hunt till we can’t , add children & grands .

also took over an unused camp and cleaned, repaired and updated, out of our own pockets this camp.

I'd probably accidentally leave the water running or burn it down on my way out. As far as not mounting a deer, that's a stupid rule. I would maybe do a Euro mount on a nice set of antlers, but I'll never shoulder mount a deer.

This thread reminds me of how lucky I am. I’m sitting in a box stand slamming beers at the moment. When I leave here I’m going to my buddy’s house to a Super Bowl party that’s an 1/8 mile up the road. My family has almost 1000 acres that is now a mix of ag and planted pines. There are 6 of that hunt it between family and good friends. We are all on the same page rule wise. We try to kill mature deer that’s it. We all chip in on the work and money that it takes to keep it up. I do more than most. Me and my young sons love it. We get to drive tractors, plant seeds, and run saws. We are also adults and don’t get our panties in a wad very often.
I’m also in a club that has over 70 members. They run dogs almost exclusively. It’s a ton of fun. We had our annual family night last night with over 100 people attending. Of that 100, at least 20 were kids under the age of 12. It’s a great camp. They do not put up with any bullshite. You start some shite you are told not to come back. I say all this to say..not all hunting camps are bad. The good ones are few and far between. If you find yourself in a good one, make yourself valuable.
