I'm going to hire a fishing guide for white perch fishing at this lake I have never white perch fished on. This guide is suppose to be good and has very positive reviews. He is called "king of the white perch" on his website.

So my question is would it be ok for me to secretly mark the fishing spots on my gps device so I can fish these areas in my boat later on?

Should I let him know what my plan is before we start fishing or do I risk having him not wanting to reveal some good fishing spots?

Anybody ever do this?

I promise you, he isn't taking you as a first time client to any of his real honey holes

His spots are brush piles. He'll be on them all the time. He will see you.

Screw it. Find out where he launches and follow him around one day for free.

Wear a wig though...

Just be upfront. Had similar idea with a saltwater guide a few years ago. Told him what I wanted and that I wanted to learn the area. He actually taught me the area and showed me some things that your average fisherman would over look. You will probably get more than you think if you are just honest IMO

Then I can say "hey! I have been killing them here the last 3 hours."

But yeah, I can see how he might be pissed. Maybe I should let him know what my game plan is. Now days, he could just tell me gps coordinates on the phone, depth to fish, and bait too.

Went fishing for specs in lake calcasieu a couple summers ago with my best friends uncle. Has a pontoon rigged with huge lights for night fishing. We would see those huge guided fishing boats ride around and anchor and he would just ride up next to them like 50 yds away and mark his GPS and we'd roll out . We had all been drinking all night so it was funny to us but I can see how it would piss them off

This will make the guides on Fork lose their mind.

No, it's not ok.

Yeah, that will go over real well.

No

Why don't you just ask him to show you around, show you what to look for, learn the area. This will be way more beneficial than just having a couple spots in your gps to go to.

Oh and

You would be looking for me and I don't guide.

Had someone do this very thing to me not too long ago. A friend of a friend wanted to learn how to fly fish so I took him out and put him on a few bulls. He must have dropped a hand held in his bag and tracked the whole trip. I saw him out there a couple weeks later in someone else's boat. The first spot I didn't think much of it, figured he found his way back, no biggie. Then he turned up two mores times that day.

That said, I am not a professional guide. If I was, I would halfway expect this to happen. If you're going to do it, just do it and don't say anything. Just route the whole thing on a hand held. Upload the track to google earth and study the areas you fished, use that knowledge to deduce what to look for in the future.

Just because you tracked the trip, doesn't mean you have to steal the guys spots. Absolutely don't start bringing other people.

Take the pointers he gives you and learn to do it on your own. That's the most rewarding part of hunting and fishing.

And even if you decide to revisit his spots, damn sure don't take other people back to them.

This sounds like a good plan and a better way to go about it. I'm going to do this. I'll email him tonight.
