I can answer part of this. I worked in the lower ninth ward the concrete fill that was trucked in for fill had blasting caps all in it. I can see where the average person seeing that would think that the wall was blown.

Nah, I'm pretty sure the rumor started with a few dumbasses in the 9th ward claiming they heard loud explosions.
In reality it loose barges slamming against that industrial canal flood wall they heard is the most likely story.

I didn't say it was the main reason but it sure erased any doubts for people that were already inclined to believe it

I had a friend that worked at a brokerage firm tell me one of their clients was an Amex Black Card holder and Amex sent a helicopter for him and his family.
Anyone remember the name of that lawyer that lived uptown or in the Garden District that stayed and went a little nuts after the storm? He went on the news shirtless and holding a shotgun and declared his house "The Independent Dutchy of (whatever his last name was)".

Guys were decked out in fun-time tactical gear and MP5's. They decided to play nice when 10 charging handles were pulled back simultaneously. Squad leader radio'd for me to come over and I brought a 7th precinct LEO with me. Dudes high tailed it pretty fast. New Orleans East was off limits for a long time until they opened up during the day for families to get whatever they could. These two clowns were there at night which made the situation even more fun as they ran across them on foot as their 998's were a couple of blocks away.

I was already in ATL when the levees broke. I was getting communication from people back in LA about armed thugs (machine guns) walking the streets as far as Baton Rouge etc. first hand testimony (black & white) said the convention center "news" was BS and the "thugs" we're actually local street/hood kids HELPING move the sick and elderly, searching for water/drinks/food (survival resources in an emergency situation is not looting or stealing FWIW). The media made it hyperbole and the frightened citizens nowhere near ground zero were fanning the flames of the hyperbole.

The news had consecutively, Oliver Thomas. Ray Nagin, Bill Jefferson, and Kathleen Blanco on a story they're doing about Katrina. They didn't do it on purpose.
Think about that.

Ashton O'Dwyer, and it was more than "a little nuts." After being admonished for it, he kept referring to an AUSA as "spear chucker" in a pleading and then said he'd agree to the Court-ordered anger management classes if each of the federal judges went to "charm school." Needless to say, disbarred.

Kathleen Blanco's bumbling, fumbling, pouting and crying on national television was an epic embarrassment.. but there was more than one inept leader in the debacle.. Mike Brown as the leader of FEMA was a disgrace.. And Nagin, holing himself up, sweating it out at the Hyatt.. What a drama queen.

No, rules of force didn't allow it. Plus they put the trigger guard on the M4's during DOMOPs that only allow semi-automatic fire. 10 rounds only in the mags too. I dual carried with an M9 and M4.

Yeah, burst makes no sense in that environment. I only had to chamber twice, once was the above incident and the other was some foolio driving around after midnight and acting sketchy when we stopped him. It was only me and my 1SG at the time.

At first seemed like everyone was getting along. Looked like thousands waiting for a parade at first.
I actually had two young men help me with chairs to bring to some elderly.
Lots of neighborhoods mixed together. During the middle of the night, things got testy.
Gunfire broke out twice with fighting rolling out to the street where I was.
I saw the guy who was stabbed and bleeding out. Saw the person dead in the wheel chair.
Was threatened wth violence because I was escaping. So many people dependent on others and didn't know how to help themselves. They got really angry.
