Seems like there is a race right now among several car manufacturers to mass produce the first driver-less car. Why?

Seems like the risk is a lot higher than the reward.

I don't know if I trust the technology, but if you drive for long periods of time, then the benefit is obvious.

Productivity, safety, better traffic flow, ability to leverage unused vehicles.

Seriously?

Take something as simple as detecting something in front of you that requires hitting the brakes. The car can detect and react MUCH faster than you possibly could.

I'm assuming the cars will work off of gps. Is your gps always 100% accurate?

It is a combination of gps and sensing the surroundings

Also once there is a large network of driverless cars I'm assuming their will be some sort of communication between the cars. Sort of a completely automated Waze.

the biggest problem with cars today is the driver. People don't all follow the rules, maintain speed, know how to slow down without hitting their brakes on the interstate causing a cascading effect or use the correct lane. In theory driverless cars would eliminate traffic caused by idiot drivers.

All kind of things you could do, besides safety. Pull up an app, ping a car, it picks you up and takes you to a location. No driver to deal with.

You people who embrace this technology are going to wake up one day in a citizen relocation camp that your Google car drove you to.
