Could you have the car come get you if you were stranded???? sorta like calling your horse back in the old days...
Yes.

The Tesla already has a "Summons" feature that can do this. Not sure how limited it is in terms of range, but you can already do this today.

It's funny because I don't think this is even a "debate". This is happening whether people will like it or not. I'm always skeptical of the futuristic nerd types who jerk off to this sort of stuff, but I've seen it with my own two eyes. You can see the strategic moves in the industry in real time - they all see it and are trying to figure out how to capitalize. Somewhat surprisingly, I think Ford, of all companies, is pretty well-positioned right now. Another company that is surprisingly well-positioned is Caterpillar; they actually had some of the original patents on some of this stuff in the 80's and let them expire because they didn't think they would ever amount to anything (whoops), but they are looking great in the industrial applications space for this.

Automated driving and 3-D printing are the next great leaps in quality of life.

I just don't get it.

I can certainly understand fear of the technology failing and thinking you trust yourself more than the technology(not saying right/wrong, just saying I get that feeling right now)...but can anyone REALLY say the same for the hundreds/thousand/millions of other drivers they'll come across on a daily basis?

You seem mad. Look dude, I trust myself and I haven't failed at driving.

But if you think for one second that electronics never fail, you are mistaken.

Not saying that I wouldn't give it a shot one day, but it would have to be 20 years deep into working the kinks out for me to feel safe letting go of the wheel and sitting back.

Anyway I'm out. Just wanted to add my .02 to the conversation but not willing to argue over it. Rather save my anger for the football situation.

What did I say that gave you that idea? Strange thing to say really based on my posts.

Again, ok. Do you trust others? I've asked you that multiple times and you have yet to answer it, because I assume the answer is no you don't, why would you? I know I don't.

What did I say that makes you even think or insinuate that?

And again, are you really trusting other human drivers over this?

Is that just some standard response to try to boom someone? At no point has he seemed "mad" in this discussion. Get over yourself.

Well, back in the old days my horse would never come when I whistled.... so I guess that's one improvement.

In general there are some really cool advance going on in construction equipment. Site development stuff is awesome and makes operators job so easy.

So, every vehicle accelerates at the same time and rate. Never any problem

I really was wondering if I said something smarmy that I forgot about. I thought I answered and asked questions in a normal debate form, I wasn't nor did I act upset in the slightest.

Not sure which video you're referring to and we may not get to THAT point in our lifetimes, but that's almost a given that we'll get there at some point.

I don't trust electronics (which can fail) to make a decision when to stop at 70 mph.
There are already millions of cars on the road today that make decisions on when to stop, and they are saving lives.

All it takes is a short or a surge or a solar flare.
The neat thing about automated systems is we can implement redundancy and fail-safes. We can't do that with humans.

Hell, there was a 60 Minutes segment on the possibility of your car getting hacked by some sicko who would take joy in seeing a wreck.
There are SO many ways to mitigate the risk of getting hacked. I'm not saying it won't happen, but security is obviously a huge concern for manufacturers, consumers, and the government. I'm much more worried about the driver next to me killing me than some hacker.

This!

I get the fear of hacking, I really do. But I don't get why that fear right now without even having the driverless car seems to be greater than the fear of other shitty human drivers.

A) jesus christ what a dumb argument
B) I dont believe you. You must have a high threshold for what you consider failing

One benefit we will see in self driving cars isnt if they crash but how they crash. Consider the plane, which is more designed to crash than it is to fly.

Most of the time, when people crash cars, they do it in the most fricked up way possible.

There are tons of people that can't operate an iPhone or computer. Will these people seamlessly operate a self-driving car?
