Well yeah, I had worked for the same company since I graduated college five years ago and was let go in May. Never asked for a raise, etc..because I assumed we were never doing great financially, but wasn't shocked when it happened.

Why would anyone assume their employer gives a shite about them.

What makes you think they didn't give a shite about you? Seems they kept you around for a while even when they were not doing well financially. I'd call that caring.

In related news, everyone should have their resume out/interview once a year. If not, you're passing up a lot of money. Plus, you need the practice and to see what the market looks like from time to time.

*Unless whomever you currently work for is overpaying you/you are already in the "made it" category. In which case, continue counting your money.

Why would they tell her she's about to be let go?

Basically, of what I know of the situation is that there's been a lot of lay-offs for really small reasons lately. They called her in and said they were going to have a "meeting" and then let her know that they'll be making a final decision in the next 2 weeks, but that she may pretty much want to start looking.

Some people are saying "well at least the company let her know." Tell you what, why don't you walk into your Boss's office tomorrow and say "Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I may be leaving for another job. I'll let you know in a week" see how long it is before they hand you a pink slip.

oo early. Can we please get through Thanksgiving before Christmas gets shoved in our faces?

I realize this, but some people are preparing their budget to purchase their kids' Christmas presents. I just think it really sucks for them.

I know of a guy who got laid off two weeks after making a sizable contribution to his company's political action committee.

Sounds like at the end of the day....they had to let someone go and her position wasn't one they deemed necessary.

Been there and had it done to me. Only time I was ever let go in my professional career. They re-hired me seven months later with a promotion. Meanwhile the asshats who let me go all got fired about five months after letting me go. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of folks. I was with that hospital for 20 years. Had gone through four administrations. That last one didn't care about anyone but themselves. Finally caught up with them. The only regret I had was that I could not have found a way to knock up the medical director's wife. Then again, I am not sure I would want any of my kids calling that fruity bastard, "dad."

On the flipside, I was in the same position as an executive at another facility many years earlier. Letting folks go who have done a good job is painful as you know how it will impact them as individuals as well as their households. Difference between the above paragraph and this paragraph was that I had the decency to get on the phone and help my layoffs find jobs. Wished that courtesy would have been returned later on, but things still turned out well and I made a living from other endeavors in the interim.

That's somewhat fair I guess. It was a weird day. My boss was a woman my mom's age and she had two sons around my age. I came in and she was balling crying before a word was even said lol.

They did try to fight me on employment though, which I guess is the only thing that kind of pissed me off.

A friend of mine just called me. His wife has worked for the same company for the past 7 years. Several promotions and pay increases. Never had any issues administratively or anything.

They’ve been letting a lot of people go lately. Anyway, they call her into the meeting and let her know she’s about to be let go. Employers are so anxious to cut costs, that they don’t care who they frick over.

Merry fricking Christmas.

Got a problem with the corporate mentality? Build your own business, rewrite the scrip, and don't become a suit. Otherwise, shut up, get back in line, and get ready for work tomorrow morning.

That's actually exactly what i'm doing. I saw the direction things were going a while ago. Witnessed many layoffs at my last company. When a close friend of mine, who was doing a good job, got fired; I started looking at my options. I went to work part-time from home and I got to school full time. I'm majoring in something marketable enough to the point where i'll never have to worry about that shite again.

It just sucks when you see someone else going through it. The dude did 3 deployments, came back and had a tough time finding work. Sucks to see this happen to them.

It's a business. It sucks but there isn't some moral obligation to employ people when you can't afford them

None of this means the company cannot survive without her. These days when raises and performance reviews are done anyone that doesn't suck gets increases and gold stars.

You have to carve out some niches for yourself and become an expert at your company in them. Many times they are crappy, no fun areas. You have to be someone that your co-workers cannot live without.

Otherwise, your job is at risk.

So, if you would have said, she was an expert in a few things that no one else could do there and her co-workers will find it hard there without her then I would be shocked. At that point it would be obvious the company is cutting key people and won't last much longer.

So you have a problem with people in different positions being treated differently? I don't understand this complaint.

That's a crock. It's usually to increase shareholder revenue.

What you’re failing to realize here is that your friend has the exact same options that the employer does.

If she finds something today, she can tell her boss, “see ya” tomorrow morning.
