Grandpa had a guy who had worked for him for 30+ years. After they got a new contract, he had to fire the guy. He had been arrested for identity theft or something like that decades ago, and couldn't pass the new harder background checks and all that the new client required.

Dude was about 5 years out from retirement. And my grandpa felt horrible so he simply kept paying the guy up until he would have retired.

A number of years ago, I remember when West Monroe got a Wal-Mart. On Christmas Eve they let some employees go home early (the ones they were keeping), and those that stayed behind having no idea what was coming cleaned up and restocked the store. At the end of the shift, the manager got on the PA and told them they were all laid off effective immediately. That told me all I wanted to know about the Wal-Mart culture.

The lack of loyalty both ways has been a problem for many years. Glad I’m retired.

I am not far out from retiring. IF I want to work, it will be for myself, but that's a big "IF." I can afford to let go and enjoy life and will probably do just that - at least for awhile. What I do know is I will never work for another organization again.

I bet you’ve never made a payroll in your life. Corporations can be anything from a 2 man S-Corp to a huge multi-national. They are both the same in that if they are no longer profitable, people lose their jobs. Comprende?

Tis the season for layoffs

People act like this is some new thing. I've been in the corporate world for 18 years and have always seen business fricking over their employees.

I worked for a company that had a principal objective we had to read out loud before every meeting. It’s listed profits and shareholders before employees.

What's the problem? How many employees do you know who prioritize their company over themselves?

That is not why unions were started.... not at all.

The shareholders don't make the company run. They don't do anything to keep the lights on.

If a company treats it's employees like shite, they will eventually be full of employees that don't give a shite.

Probably, but if your primary focus is profitability, you can still take care of employees. They're not mutually exclusive.

Otherwise, join a union. I know that is not popular in the south, but these situations are what unions were "initially" started on.

Then the company would have to shut the whole office down and everyone would lose their job. Yay unions

Too early. Can we please get through Thanksgiving before Christmas gets shoved in our faces?

No, it was to emphasize how heartless these companies are. They know it’s next to impossible to find another job this time of year, but let people go anyway. Assholes can’t wait til after Christmas?

It sucks but that’s just life in today’s business. Always comes down to the bottom line. Hell, look at IBM and their Watson system; it’s making a lot of jobs unnecessary. The key is always make yourself more valuable than those around you, never get comfortable and always learn and adapt.

It sucks, but its part of the business world. Its better than the alternative of not cutting costs and watching the entire business go bankrupt and everyone be out of a job.

It is better than that particular alternative, though who knows if that was actually the alternative

It sucks but at the end of the day it’s about the business, CEO and shareholders making money, not your friends wife. Timing though sucks! Hope she finds work sooner than later.
