A friend of mine just called me. His wife has worked for the same company for the past 7 years. Several promotions and pay increases. Never had any issues administratively or anything.

They’ve been letting a lot of people go lately. Anyway, they call her into the meeting and let her know she’s about to be let go. Employers are so anxious to cut costs, that they don’t care who they frick over.

Merry fricking Christmas.

Why would they tell her she's about to be let go?

Yeah that was pretty considerate of them.

Sounds like at the end of the day....they had to let someone go and her position wasn't one they deemed necessary.

Certainly different, no doubt. With that said, employees move about much more than they use to. We were taught not to as potential employers would view doing so as unfavorable.

Another reason to try to live within one's means.

If you can find someone to do the same work for less money would you? I am all for loyalty. Perhaps she could suggest accepting a pay decrease in lieu of being fired? They might accept that. Otherwise, join a union. I know that is not popular in the south, but these situations are what unions were "initially" started on.

It sucks, but its part of the business world. Its better than the alternative of not cutting costs and watching the entire business go bankrupt and everyone be out of a job.

I do not believe in two week notices, most companies won't even give you a notice when you are being let go

It always surprised me when people brag about being loyal to a company becuase they are “such a good company to work for”. No they aren’t, They suck, they all suck and they’ll all cut your throat at the drop of a hat. They don’t care about you or your loyalty so why would you care about them?

It’s really just a money deal. If they can pay Sally 30k to do a slightly more mediocre job than Betty at 45k, they make the move.

Multiply that times several employees and you “save” a lot of money on salaries and benefits.

Yep. I wasn't trolling about capex. Big companies use a buzz word such as synergies and what not to make it more palatable.

February comes quick and shareholders need their dividends.

Correct. Work hard and provide value - but always keep your eye on the performance of the company and leadership. Know when to get off the boat.

There never was. You're just labor to them, and they should be just a pay check and a means to an end for you.

Nah, I worked for a few employers that actually cared but that was 20 years ago. You do have a point.
