Amen.

I told my (now former) boss that I didn't trust him or the company I worked for and that I was always going to look out for myself above everything else. I worked for a Fortune top 20 company-you're just a # to them.

Fortunately I was in a position recently (due to the stupidity of a former co-worker) to negotiate some equitable separation terms (non-repayment of signing bonus and relocation costs + several month's salary) and I walked out the door with the biggest smile on my face.

Always ALWAYS look after yourself first and do the right thing for you and your family. You can hope a company will treat you right but you can never expect them to.

In all honesty, having a meeting and letting someone know they MAY get laid off is highly outside of protocol and likely the decision came from a corporate entity and handed to local management to delve out “potentially”....probably told them NOT to say anything but they felt bad and are trying to do her a solid. I have been told a number to cut by end of the month....on one occasion, I DID GIVE A HEADS UP....It did not go as planned.....i felt bad for her....but in the end, she did not use the time wisely to find a job, yet alerted the rest of the staff a layoff was coming, therefor it was like an episode of hard knocks when i called staff one by one on that Friday...it was not pleasant and I won’t alert someone again....it doesn’t change what’s happening and only makes it harder on me....full disclosure, each was handed a severance package which was generous and i did play an active role in assisting them to other jobs, even competitors...if i don’t do the job, somebody will who doesn’t have any compassion. In the end, we are back to full staff, just less experienced folks....

Im confuaed, companies lay people off all the time. Is loyalty supposed to mean keeping needless employees?

Employees aren't much better.

An employer owes you no more than what you agreed upon as compensation.

Also, as the OP said, if she finds another gig, say buh bye...be careful, cause she may be leaving 7 weeks pay on the table....have your resume tight and your personal connections and options open, cause one day they will hand you a box for your things....i know my day is coming....sooner or later....it ain’t a marriage, it’s a job....

As someone on the other side, I had to lay someone off a few weeks ago and it made me sick to do it. I still feel terrible about it. His old position didn't exist due to advances in technology. He was a loyal employee for a decade and had been through some hard times with the company. I tried to find other places to put him, but he wasn't any good at them. I kept him on payroll a year longer than I should have hoping that each new position I gave him might work out. I made sure he had a fair severance package to get him and his family through the holidays.

So frick you because some of us care a lot. It's cliche, but we're a family business and my employees are part of that family.

The lack of loyalty both ways has been a problem for many years. Glad I’m retired.

EVERY situation is different but most likely:

1. The company is run by fools who just fired a valuable employee and they will eventually be bankrupt.

2. she was not of any real value to the company so she was let go.

Most of the time it is the second one. People sit around thinking they are valuable to others yet they play on their phones, use all their sick days, come in 15 mins late and take an extra long lunch, cruise Facebook on company time and brag about how easy their job actually is each day.

If she was indispensable, she would still be there. Because they could not afford to lose her.

Moral?

Work hard EVERY DAY and make yourself indispensable.

Couldn't be further from the truth. No one is valuable to a corporation anymore, and increasing your pay is the easiest way to get walked out of the door. Companies are cutting costs to make money for their shareholders NOW, because it won't be there to make in 10 years. People who work outside of these corporations have no idea how little they care about your work ethic, skills, or dedication. You make too much money, they will work to get rid of you. A manager from the Cortana Lowe's just told me about their latest "purge", fired 6 middle tier managers making over $22 an hour and replaced all 6 with managers with ZERO company experience for $15 an hour.

So the company should go broke to keep people employed? I have never understood this philosophy.

To be fair most of the millenials on this board just play on here and send emails all day. Bill gates could make a program that did most of their jobs. Why should employers be loyal?

That's because you don't understand how the corporate game works. Companies don't go out of business due to labor costs, that's an absolute joke. Big companies go out of business because of poor decision making and wasted spending at the corporate level. They are only cutting labor to increase the value of their own stock shares while the getting is good...
