bullshite. The last one was a joke. I took 3 showers and drank from the tap. No issues and haven't heard of one from anyone else. Can you walk to 14 really good places to eat, 4 bars, a dry cleaner, a specialty butcher shop, two groceries, 3 bakeries, hardware store, barber shop, two independent bookstores, a men's clothing store, two vets, a pharmacy and like 5 women's clothing stores? All within 5 minutes? That is called quality of life. If I didn't go watch soccer on the weekends, my truck would never move on the weekends.

Hoping St. James Cheese is one of those, best walk you can take.

For all the outsiders, New Orleans is FAR from perfect. Crime sucks, hipsters suck, my rent going up sucks.

BUT...

The food in this city is better than it's ever been. We won't live uptown forever, but the time we spend here will be some of the best years of our lives. It's almost European living: walking distance to bars, restaurants, markets, etc. If people don't understand how wonderful that life is, they need to travel more.

During the "awful" boil order I showered twice...NBD. Glass has me beat on drinking from the tap...I'm not that hardcore

It's still my hometown and will always be special to me. I visit often, just prefer to live elsewhere for many reasons. NOLA is awesome, cause its NOLA.

If it's that awesome, why don't you reside there?

The best and worst thing about New Orleans is that no one gives a shite. That's a fun way to live, but it can also be frustrating. A lot of Nola fanboys like to shrug at some of the major issues, while Nola haters make the place sound like Mogadishu.

It used to be New Orleans was a city that could be experienced by all classes of people. With gentrification in a lot of the neighborhoods, that is becoming less of a case. It's like that in other cities, too. It's just the changing geography of medium and large cities in America, but going back to the whole not giving a shite thing, Nola won't do anything about it, while other cities will and have. To add insult to injury, Nola has the disadvantage of fighting a two-front war against losing its identity and losing itself physically.

So the people renting from the homeowners are turning the areas around?

Yes, when the landlord can now get a rent higher than section 8 the neighborhood starts turning around.

If they bought low. I'm curious to see what some of these 100 plus year old 400K 2 bed 1 bath houses values are 10 years from now.

If you moved from that old money part of uptown further down river near the gentrification you could walk to the Vous.

Ehhh renters typically move from place to place and do not contribute to keeping the houses up. I give them some credit for improving the areas but not as much as the homeowner.

Even if they bought high, barring some meltdown of the housing market, they should make money or break even. There are very few times in history where the housing market has taken such a hit to where homes are worth less than they were 10 years ago.

My old section 8er neighbor was the best neighborhood watch. Dude sat on our front porch all day and kept lookout. Much better than those private security patrols through the neighborhood.

I got a couple of those and they are good people.

You are spot on with this, the laissezfaire attitude is a double edge sword. I'm interested to see how this changes over time. As a "fanboy" I don't want that laid back attitude to change drastically. Before you know it you won't be able to smoke in bars. I would like to see other major issues addressed.

What's the difference between a fanboy and a local ?
