...especially ME. What are some cool/interesting jobs that have nothing to do with the oil industry. Obviously working for a company like Ford or Chevy might be fun for car lovers. I'm trying to give my kid guidance and I have no idea what you people do on a daily basis ( I considered engineering since I was in the upper 99th percentile in math, but I was smart enough to be a doctor so I went the DDS route).

I work on the pressure systems used to fuel up and launch rockets. Fracture mechanics of crack growth, two phase flow from relief devices, oxygen compatibility of valves...

Being a dentist sounds horrible to me.

I used to think engineers sat in a back room and did math all day, but the advent of modern calculators would make y'all useless if that were the case.

911Moto: “Do you mind if I take a look, I’m actually a doctor.”

Doctor: “Yeah you said that several times last night but really, you’re just a dentist.”

Are all dentists arrogant douche bags or just you?

I used to laugh when dentists called themselves doctors, and I still do

exactly...engineering is a lot more project-driven than it used to be...

This is exactly the specific type of answer I'm looking for, and it sounds pretty interesting.

Dude...you don't even know. It can be beyond horrible at times.
My neck made the decision for me and I was forced to hang it up, but I actually enjoyed a lot of the aspects of dentistry (mainly cosmetic stuff). It's the people attached to the teeth that I really hated. However, the logistics of practicing the profession are unbeatable (the hours, the pay, the freedom as the boss, the pay...).

Why did I have to show so many pre-med friends how to do physics if they were so smart?

Now for your actual question, I actually think most engineering jobs can become boring. Just as I'm sure being a dentist would become a bore. I lasted about 2 years in an actual engineering job (granted it is oilfield). I think no matter what the indistry, I'd have used the degree to get my foot in and then some how move into a management position. Crunching numbers for the same ole shite blows.

Depends.

I manage a firm that designs roads, bridges, traffic signals, water/wastewater systems, and a myriad of other services. My young engineers seem very happy and we challenge them.

In private consulting someone can stay an engineer or go the rain-maker route. My grades weren't great (I was bored), but I have a knack for sales. I ended up making quite a bit more than the brainiacs I graduated with.

If a kid is an extrovert, they can consider ChemE, ME, CE, etc. Going in sales or pursuing a management path are good possibilities.

Lots of cool engineering jobs out there in all disciplines.

I did race car aerodynamics at first. Now I do airplanes and jet engines. Plenty of cool shite out there.
