That tax could only be used for roads and bridges. All 17 cents a gallon would have gone to roads and bridges ONLY.

Common myth.

Only a small percentage was to go to schools. And tops was never a part of that equation.

But that has nothing to do with this. The percentage stated in the law goes where it should with gambling money. Into the general fund.

This bill would have dedicated that all the new tax mmoney (read all 17 cents of the new tax) would go to roads, not some general fund.

The old tax rate money would be used to fund all other infrastructure needs that currently share the tax rate with roads and bridges. That's 16 cents (which really equals 7 cents for roads and bridges) split between all infrastructure.

And state police.

Not a myth at all. You can read about it on the Louisiana lottery website

Lottery is dedicated to k-12. And it's goes there. Was dedicated in 2003 or 4.

But gambling as a whole goes into the general fund and is distributed from there. Some goes to education. But TOPS was never to be funded by the lottery.

The .17 increase would raise the La gas tax to roughly 17% at today's prices. Add in federal taxes, and it bumps it up to 20% at 2.20 a gallon.

I can't believe their are people that argue for paying more taxes!

LA has enough tax revenue; only truly special people believe they need more.

If you would have read the actual bill that was proposed you would have known that all of the requested .17 and then reduced to .10 would have gone to road construction. Not pension funds, not payroll, not engineering and design. 100% to moving dirt and pouring concrete.

So they want to be squeaky clean with this new tax, but what are they going to do with the existing revenue from the current 20 cent tax, use more of it for pensions, state police, and their consultant buddies.

That's what you are missing, there's where the bait and switch comes in.
The existing tax will become more of a slush fund than it is now.

Until they reform the way the current tax is spent, no one is going to trust them with a new tax.

This is a losing battle. You might as well argue with a 13 year old cat.

Facts are facts. Infrastructure projects will diminish over the next several years due to diminishing funds.

On the positive side of things, there might be less whining about traffic delays due to road construction.

It's an example of how tax payers are bring nickel and dimed to death.
I would have opposed that tax because there is already a tax in place on land lines designed to help the deaf and no one has shown that tax isn't enough.

They just increased taxes 1.3 Billion dollars to support the regular budget.
This increased state revenues going into the general fund about 20% and they tell us they need more!!

Then they follow that up with a big gas tax plan which would increase our gas tax from 42nd in the nation to 7th or 8th. That coming right after we became the highest in the nation in sales taxes.

1.3Billion then 600 million and tax reform plans for 400 million more. That is the Edwards plan to tax us more and more.

If we said yes to everything JBE proposed, there would be over 2 Billion dollars in tax increases in less than two years!!! People can't make ends meet now, and Edwards wants more and more.

this is a prime example of "just saying shite"

You have no idea how underfunded the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population is.

And no one has land lines anymore.

People are stupid. We have terrible roads and people want to sprinkle fairy dust on them.

Baton Rouge voters shot down a hotel tax last year. It wouldn't even affect them, but they shot it down because it was a tax. Didn't even read the ballot.

People are stupid.

And Jindal was the corrupt governor when it came to DOTD, not JBE.

And what reforms has Edwards undertaken in DOTD? I missed that.

Do we know where the current gas tax is going? Is it going to new roads, bridges, and maintenance?
Is there are process where projects are ranked in order of importance or do certain areas come first?

I'd like to hear about how Edwards has cleaned up DOTD.

My god we have the most willfully ignorant people in this state.

What I've learned from this thread is that people assume that all taxes will be misused. They are convinced that the tax would not be used for roads and bridges, although, it was clearly specified that it had to be used for roads and bridges. You will not convince some people that taxes are good. Other people will reject anything to do with JBE on principle. It's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.
