I have a hard time feeling sympathy for shrimpers, farmers and the like.

The guys I know who put in the work and do buisness like a professional have comfortable lives.

The guys I know who work three days a week and can barely shake a hangover long enough to fire up the boat or run a combine, end up struggling.

One day I bought some 31-35s for $2.50# from a fisherman. The dock was giving $2.35#. The next day the fisherman went up to #2.75 bc the dock went to $2.55. By the end of the same week the dock had dropped the price to $1.90. I dont think it should be fluctuating that much.

I asked about govt money because I have a standing argument with my neighbor. He says the US govt gives money to people from Pakistan to run gas stations.

I say running a gas station is hard, crappy work and most Americans don't want to work that hard.

You really think your tax dollars fund fuel for Vietnamese shrimpers?

Nope, I've never of anything like that. Even if someone doesn't have money, they will ask their relatives for help. The government will not provide you any money to start a business.

This isn't just a problem with the Shrimp Industry. Why do you think there are so many Vietnamese stores, cleaners, etc popping up.....all Government assisted.

These stores just don't pop up because the government hands out assistance. In fact, these Asian's stores exist because they can make a honest living putting in long hours and hard work. Let'me guess, Asians change ownership of business every 5 years b/c the gov't gives them tax exemptions?

ETA: Your LA Civics teacher must've taught you that "foreigners" get tax exemptions huh? The stupid unreliable information teachers pass on to their students, I know first hand because I was also taught that and corrected him back in the 90s.

Back in the mid 1980's, a LA shrimper was telling me how dumb the Vietnamese were because two families would go in together to buy a boat and when one family got done with their shrimping, the other family would get on board and go shrimping - rinse and repeat. It sounded to me like they were some hard workers and the guy telling the story was the one who needed to wise up.

I don't understand why this is a story one way or the other. If you don't want to shrimp for the price you will be paid then don't. Either someone else will for the price you don't want to accept or they won't and the price will go up. Then consumers will end up paying whatever price they deem acceptable. If too many people don't shrimp and the price gets too high they'll eat something else until it comes down. The market will work, just do whatever the Hell you want.

So the shrimpers get money from BP, they use this money for bigger boats creating the problem of too much supply??

Buying imported cars and boats doesn't affect the small man. It affects the Fords, Chevys, Dodges multimillion dollar CEOs.

Buying imported shrimp directly affects the poor man that is fishing and processing for a living

Not always. A couple of them that I know bought titties for their ole ladys. So not all of them paid for bigger boats.
