LSU also needs a better alumni support system that includes lsu emails for alums.

I have one of these as well. I received an email after graduation that told me I could get it for free.

Some of their salaries has to come from the university since they are state employees. And the millions given back well exceeds their salaries. You can't be that dumb. The load on the campus infrastructure? Give me a break

The LSU coaching staff is the highest paid in the nation, and this is without including TAF funding, the total compensation paid to the staff by the university is over $8 million, as linked before the Athletic Department is contributing $7.2 million, that would be less.

Also all athletic department salaries are paid by the Athletic department which gains its own money, not a dime comes from the state or the school. There is a difference between TAF and the Athletic Department. Neither receive any money from the school or state.

You must have missed the thread about the highest paid state employees, the entire LSU coaching staff are employees of LSU and the state of LA, they will receive in 2014 over $8,000,000.00 in salary from LSU/state. As I have stated before the Athletic department will contribute $7.2 million to the university annually, their donation is not offsetting their cost to the university.

Thanks for the link

The reality is much different. Miles’ $4.3 million yearly take dwarfs that of any other on campus.
But he only makes $300,000 as a Louisiana State University staffer. So where does the other $4 million come from?
The primary source of Miles’ extraneous income is television money.

Not a lot of people have these. I sat in on a meeting proposing this for one of the colleges. The easiest way to get more people to donate to their LSU college is to give them an email and send a donation e-mail during fundraisers instead of calling homes. Tons of schools have this in place are are reaping the benefits.

LSU already has this in place for its alumni. It's not their fault the students aren't taking advantage.

In 2000, 1 semester tuition and fees were $1,699.

In 2013, 1 semester tuition and fees were $3,933.

2000

2013

Please explain to me how the quality of LSU's education has doubled in 13 years and how the school is soooooo in need of money.

Do you, as an LSU fan and TD poster, really care about anything that happens on the academic side of LSU?

of course I do

quote:
Does it bother you that state funding has put LSU into a giant hole financially that it is having to dig its way out of?

what bothers me is a state constitution that only allows the Governor to cut funding to State Universities and State Hospitals to manage the budget

quote:
Do things like faculty salaries even make a blip on your radar screen?

yeah and so does a tenure system that allows shitty professors to hang around when they dont contribute anything to the academic side nor the research side of the University

Do you care that there are academic buildings on campus with the ceilings caving in,

except all of the turmoil on campus for years because of construction and renovation projects. Late 80s/early 90s LSU facilities were shitty, now they are beautiful for the most part.

quote:
that can be fully renovated for $15 million, but we just spent $90 million on a new south endzone?

who is we? TAF? the stadium has nothing to do with the school budget

Instate cost to attend is $22,386 per year at LSU right now. That puts a grad with 4 years and no grants at $89,544 in debt to start with. At the current interest rate of 6.8% for federal student loans, that puts the total cost of attendance at $123,656!

To go to Harvard in 2000, the total cost for attendance with the same interest rate was only $182,895.

I'm confused as to why you think the two are equitable.

Not a dollar of state funding goes to athletics. Not a dollar of university money goes to athletics.

So what's the point?

Good! They've been working on getting this started. Many of LSU's colleges have piss poor endowments.

I think the tenure system has lead to the overall downfall of college academics. What incentive does a tenured professor have to really do anything? They bust arse to achieve tenure status, but upon gaining it tend to sit back and just do enough to get by. Right now the pond is overstocked with those professors and those TAs who end up teaching the class are still students themselves. Do away with tenure and the previously mentioned support staff fat, then lets talk about having athletics do more for academics. The academic side of the university really needs to help itself first.

Unless you moved here from Mississippi, you're giving your kid the shite end of the stick by educating them in Louisiana at all. Yes, there are exceptions to this, but they are just that, exceptions. You're lying to yourself if you can't admit that.

It's amazing LSU functions at all. I don't know what kind of shape LSU would be in without athletics, or if anyone who didn't have to, would attend LSU without athletics.

Forbes just ranked LSU one of the best bang for your buck schools in the US.

Yeah, that's cool and all, but other schools can raise your IQ by 20 points just by stepping on campus.

de-incentivizing from being productive in the name of "job security" doesnt work in a capitalistic economy

Seems LSU gets enough money to do what it needs to do. It's called budgeting and responsible spending. Why is it every entity that isn't public is forced to live within its means, but public entities feel they have a right to ask for and get more money every year? Do you have that arrangement at your home or job? Doubtful. But public institutions, for some reason, feel they deserve it.
