There are studies all over the map on this one. Even some that will show it has nothing to do with hydration.

It's usually caused either by overexertion or some sort of nutrition issue. Increase hydration, increase sodium and electrolytes ( salt stick) and play with the variables until you find a solution or work with a professional and pay the $$$.

Unfortunately, when it comes to issues like this, there is no one size fits all answer.

Find other cardio a couple days a week that's less impact. And rest every now and then, listen to your body.

This

Hit up a stationary bike or elliptical for a few weeks and stop running. Body just needs a rest from the impact.

Running 5 days a week isn't bad for you, its ludicrous to suggest that, but it can be bad for your legs on concrete/asphalt. When you do start running again, try to find some trails or something that is softer. Also, go to a running shoe place and make sure you get insoles that fit your feet. Its amazing how much effect the proper shoes/soles can have on your entire body.

Is it bad to run in minimus shoes on concrete?

not necessarily. This is a common mistake. A lot of times a muscle is in pain because it is weak and/or lengthened. If the antagonistic muscle is dominate, it will cause tension (or a lengthening) in the agonist. So in other words, you'd be stretching a muscle that is already stretched

Well, frick.

First, let me preface that I'm no where close to a runner & one of the other guys in this thread may have more of a working knowledge. But I'll refer back to my earlier post about "some can, some can't". I think you better have impeccable mechanics & slowly build up & even then I wouldn't advise it. I think, as with anything, this "minimalist" thing got overly popular & resulted in a "this is cool, let's do it" kinda cult following. I bought a pair of new balance minimus to train in(squat, DL, etc). I made the the mistake of wearing them all day long for about a month. My feet, calves & hammys flared up bad. It did make me aware of a potential problem though

4444, do you use salt sticks? How do you use yours? I seem to have calf cramps only during the race itself and not during training. SO I'm hesitant to experiment with them during training when there are no issues BUT I surely don't want to try them for the first time on race day.

Suggestions???

I just really like the shoes because I have enormous feet and they don't make my feet look like canoes when I wear them.

:mind blown:
soft tissue, then strengthen a lengthened/weak muscle
Stretch a tight/dominate muscle.
The problem is identifying which is which.

I do. Once I start training for more than 2 hours at a time as temps increase, I will take one before and one an hour during. They've got a lot more sodium than endurilytes so you don't need to take as many per hour (and it ends up being cheaper in the long run).

You could do a sweat rate test and all but I think it's probably a bit of overkill.

I battled hydration issues for my last half and full ironman, added some salt and DOUBLED my water intake on the bike and had a great half iron back in May.

It's a lot of trial and error, but I would say increase your water intake then add in salt stick. I was taking 3 bottles over a 2:30 bike....I went to 5.5 bottles and rode 3 minutes faster and ran a half iron PR by a ton.
