I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Yeah, my parents let my little sister keep a computer in her room. She had a TV with 24/7 MTV on it, too.

At 13 she ended up with two 18 y/o youths pluggin' her from both ends while my parents slept. That's where the computer in the kids' room ends - your daughter finger-cuffed by two slack-jawed zit faces.

14 year olds are still too young to make responsible mature decisions consistently. Case in point the boys from Florida. A previous poster made a great point about getting good sleep and how electronics interrupt that and also how these young girls are easily manipulated. The pediatricians and child psychologists I know all agree phones need to be out of the room for sleep purposes, and the computers need to be off. If your child can't abide by that simple bedtime rule then as parents you need to sack up and do the unpopular but correct thing and take their electronics away until the kid can demonstrate responsible use. Our teens have free reign of the phones and computers, iPads etc. But at bedtime, everything comes out of their rooms and they either go to bed or read a book. And we do monitor their social media. The rule is to keep it "PG" or it has to be removed from their Twitter Insta, Kik, snapchat, etc. The idiots posting on here about how the OP kid is going to be a slut because of a slightly overprotective parent have Obviously not raised teens and are really just ignorant to the ways of the world. Ask any parent of some Catholic School kids here in BR and they all have heard about kids being forced out for Sexting. Monitor your kids!

also have a 14-year-old daughter who's going to be a freshman. She has her Macbook and phone in her room. Why? Because I trust her. She makes good decisions in academic and social situations and has never given us reason to deny her those privileges.

I'm a teacher, and I am not naive about what many kids her age are doing. She and I have a very open line of communication, and she has told me about things most kids would never tell their parents about (friends trying drugs, becoming sexually active, etc). Heck, she asked my advice on how to handle ending a friendship with someone whose values had drastically changed for the worse. In short, we communicate, and I trust her.

These girls were always the sluttiest in high school

Dude everyone sends nudes and sex tapes to each other, it's 2015 cuuh. No one finds playboys and vcr tapes anymore. Seriously I used it to mainly listen to music and online game after school. But most these kids are way to involved in social media

No. Your house your rules. I will not let my kids keep a laptop or cell pone in their room at night. I also know most of my kids' friends parents won't let them either.

I watched two step daughters royally frick up their lives because of unmonitored internet access. They brought phones with no sim cards into their bedrooms ... control the router and you'll be all right.

I will simply say this:

More bad would come from it than good. She is not entitled to have it, and plenty of people keep their computers in an open room.

Even the best kids give in to curiosity, temptation, and pressure.

That doesn't make her a bad kid, it just makes her a kid.

I would never ask people on the OT how to parent my child. She's 14 why do you need others advice or opinions now?

It's a school computer? If it is I wouldn't allow her to keep it in her room over night. There is only one reason a kid wants to do that, to surf the web all night. Not in my house.
